World Lacrosse awards 2024 Women's U20 World Championship to Hong Kong

World Lacrosse today announced that the 2024 Women’s U20 Championship has been awarded to Hong Kong.

The tournament will be hosted by the China Hong Kong Lacrosse Association with support from World Lacrosse as the top women’s programs compete at the junior-level world championship.

Mong Kok Stadium, which seats 6,500 and serves as a regular venue for Hong Kong Premier League Football matches, will be the site of featured games, including the opening game, semi-finals and medal games, as well as opening and closing ceremonies; additional fields will be used at the nearby Tai Hang Tung Recreation Ground.

World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr said:

“We are thrilled to bring this world championship to Hong Kong, the perfect host for one of our marquee events.

“The worldwide development of lacrosse can be shown through the ascension of the China Hong Kong Lacrosse Association this century and through this event, which becomes more competitive with more talented players every time it is held.

“I know the lacrosse community will benefit from seeing our sport thrive in more hotbeds around the world, and specifically in 2024 with Hong Kong’s support.”

The competition will be the seventh edition of the event, and the first to be hosted in Asia.

A total of 23 teams competed in the last edition of the event in 2019 in Canada, where the United States captured its fifth gold medal over the host team.

In that tournament, England finished fourth after eventually falling to Australia 13-8 in the bronze medal game.

CHKLA CEO Raymond Fong said:

“We are honoured that World Lacrosse has chosen Hong Kong as the host city of the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship.

“It will be the first time this tournament is held in Asia, and we hope to see the local community and international fans supporting this major sports event and support the growth of lacrosse in Hong Kong.”

The 2023 competition will mark the first time Hong Kong will host a World Lacrosse Championship since the China Hong Kong Lacrosse Association was founded in 1993.

Hong Kong sent its first team to a senior-level championship in 2002 at the men’s championship, and has competed at the women’s championship since 2013; it participated at the women’s U20 championship for the first time in 2019.

Lacrosse community takes part in annual Movember campaign

Movember Foundation logo

Throughout November, lacrosse teams all over the country are taking part in the annual Movember campaign to help raise money to help support men’s mental and physical health.

The annual campaign, which has taken place every November since the Movember Foundation was formed in 2003, traditionally sees people grow (or, in many cases, attempt to grow) moustaches to highlight a whole range of men’s health issues, including suicide, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer.

In more recent years, the campaign has grown to include different initiatives for those who are unable to grow a moustache but still want to raise some money for charity.

Move for Movember (run or walk 60km), Host a Mo-ment (rally the troops and do something fun and easy), or Mo your own Way (choose an adventure challenge) are all ways the Movember Foundation uses to get as many people involved in the campaign as possible.

So far, over 15 lacrosse teams are taking the plunge and have already begun raising money!

Any money raised will help to fund vital research into testicular cancer (the world’s most common cancer among men aged 15-49) and prostate cancer (1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime), as well as helping to prevent male suicide (globally, on average one man dies every minute from suicide).

If you’d like to donate to the Movember Foundation directly, you can do so via their website below.

England Lacrosse joins Stonewall Diversity Champions programme

England Lacrosse become a Stonewall Diversity Champion

England Lacrosse is delighted to join Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, the leading employers’ programme for ensuring workplaces are truly inclusive.

Being a part of the programme highlights our commitment to embedding LGBTQ+ inclusion into our workplace and across our entire organisation.

As part of the programme, Stonewall will support us to enter the Workplace Equality Index as well as provide tailored email and phone support and advice as and when needed.

They’ll also help us to attract and retain the best talent by listing us on their Proud Employers careers site, Stonewall’s LGBTQ-inclusive jobs board, enabling us to attract diverse talent and position England Lacrosse as an inclusive employer of choice.

In addition to that, they’ll also help us to build our professional network through access to their annual series of seminars and webinars with topics ranging from Workplace Equality Index best practice to global mobility.

Ultimately, being a part of the Diversity Champions programme will help us to learn from the vast knowledge and expertise held at Stonewall as they give us access to their own LGBTQ+ inclusion guidance resources, review our policies for LGBTQ+ inclusion by their in-house team of experts, and have the opportunity to train England Lacrosse staff, providing them with the knowledge and confidence to play their part in creating an inclusive workplace.

England Lacrosse Head of Commercial & Marketing and Inclusion Lead, Caroline Royle, said:

“England Lacrosse's commitment to become a Stonewall Diversity Champion highlights the work we’re doing to be a truly inclusive organisation.

“With Stonewall’s help, we’ll continue the work already being done within the organisation to increase and improve inclusion in our sport from grassroots all the way up to the Board Room.

“We can’t wait to get started and look forward to working with such an experienced organisation as Stonewall.”

Stonewall work with over 900 organisations across the UK and every one of their Diversity Champions shares their core belief in the power of a workplace that truly welcomes, respects and represents LGBTQ+ employees.

Stonewall was founded in 1989 and they’ve had over 30 years of successful campaigning for the rights of LGBTQ+ people; you can find more information about their impact HERE.

Their website includes a vast array of free resources from a glossary to research which outlines barriers faced by LGBTQ+ people; they also have a series of blogs that cover different identities and intersectionality within the community: ace identities, non-binary identities, black LGBT people, trans allies, bi people.

University teams show their colours for Rainbow Laces Day

University lacrosse teams all over the country have been showing their colours over the past week to celebrate Stonewall’s annual Rainbow Laces campaign.

These celebrations came to a head on Wednesday 26 October with a special Rainbow Laces Day when our university teams donned their rainbow laces, Stonewall’s symbol of inclusion across sport, during their BUCS fixtures.

Stonewall first started their famous Rainbow Laces campaign nine years ago and, since then, over one million of us have laced up in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.

The campaign has brought visibility for LGBTQ+ people in sport and raised awareness of their experiences on and off the pitch.

But there’s still so much to be done and this year’s theme (“inclusion has no off-season”) is encouraging everyone involved in sport to make a difference just by starting conversations with those around them, calling out anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment when they hear it, and raising awareness of the stigma and discrimination that LGBTQ+ people in sport still face.

That’s exactly what university lacrosse teams have been doing during the campaign this year and you can check out what some of them have been up to below!

Midlands select teams to take on the Netherlands in World Championship friendlies

Midlands Select Team v Netherlands graphic

In preparation for their 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s World Championship campaign, the Netherlands will take on two Midlands select teams in two friendlies on Saturday 12 November.

The games, which will take place at Keresley RFC in Coventry, will first see a Midlands select B team play a Netherlands B team at 11am before a Midlands select A team play a Netherlands A team at 1pm.

The Midlands select squads will be managed/coached by Chris White, Anthony Walker, and Iain Bate in what will be a good test for a Netherlands side who finished 22nd at the last World Lacrosse Men’s World Championship in 2018 and seventh at the last Men’s European Lacrosse Championship in 2016.

Some of England’s best club players will be playing for the Midlands select teams, including a couple of players involved in the last two editions of The Fly, in what will undoubtedly be a tough challenge against an international team who finished second (to England) at the Men’s European Lacrosse Championship just 14 years ago.

Those wanting to watch the games can do so by heading to Keresley RFC in person where admittance will be free of charge!

Easter and summer 2023 Triple Arrow Camps schedule announced

We are delighted to announce the Easter and summer schedule for Triple Arrow Camps 2023, featuring seven camps so far with more still yet to be confirmed.

After a hugely successful Triple Arrow Camps series earlier this year, the 2023 Camps aim to take lacrosse to more girls than ever before with a mixture of day and residential camps.

Triple Arrow Camps are England Lacrosse’s official holiday camps that bring together girls from all over the country to fun and friendly environments that allow them to thrive and be inspired by some of the best lacrosse coaches in the country.

Every Triple Arrow Camp follows a curriculum designed by experienced England Lacrosse coaches with key outcomes set for each group to ensure everyone completes the week having developed their individual ability.

Each Camp provides a unique experience as the coaches plan specialist daily schedules and sessions based on their experience and the ability of the group they are leading.

With dedicated group leads, coaches have ample time to get to know the campers and identify personal focus areas; each girl who attends a Triple Arrow Camp will leave with an individual feedback report noting their highlight moments and action plans to help them improve further.

Easter 2023 also sees the return of our ever popular Perform+ Camp which allows every camper to train like a performance athlete and get an insight into exactly what it takes to train at the next level, with some of the country’s best coaches as well as current England national squad members.

Winter Box League coaching teams announced

Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) has this week announced the names of the four teams competing at this year’s first Winter Box League, along with the selected Head Coach and Team Manager pairings.

London Knights, Steelheads, Thundercats, and Heaton Hornets will all be taking part in the inaugural competition that takes place on Sunday 18 December, Sunday 8 January, and Sunday 15 January.

The London Knights will be led by two England legends and European Championship winners, Tom Roche and Eliot Pugh, who will take on the Head Coach and Team Manager roles respectively.

Roche will be Head Coach in a non-playing capacity while he recovers from a pre-existing knee injury while Pugh will be the Knights’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Steelheads, who finished third at this year’s first ever Box Fest in Oxford, will be headed up by England Assistant Coach, Rob Ingham Clark, and England offensive star, Matt Marsh, who will both take on the Head Coach and Team Manager roles as co-coaches; both are expected to suit-up and play at certain points during the League.

Retired England attacker, David ‘Wavey’ Leach has been selected as Head Coach of Box Fest runners-up, Thundercats, and will team up with Primal ‘Nando’ Fernando as Team Manager.

Leach and Fernando have over a decade of international box experience between them and they’ll be leading their Thundercats team both off and on the floor.

The final team to take part in this year’s Winter Box League is Heaton Hornets who will be led by England Head Coach, Andy Downing, as Head Coach; he’ll work alongside SBL Executive Committee member, Brucie Morris, as his Team Manager.

The Heaton Hornets identity first took the floor at the first ever Tasko Cup in 2014 and will make its return to the box lacrosse scene when the Winter Box League finally begins in December.

While the coaching teams have now been announced, applications to enter the player draft remain open HERE with a discounted rate of £60pp available until 1 November after which the price increases to £75.

Applications to join the player draft will close at midnight on Sunday 13 November with the opening game day on Sunday 11 December at the 3G Dome at Oxford Academy School.

Jasmine Waite joins England Lacrosse Communications Team on freelance basis

Jasmine Waite (second from the left on the back row) at the Midlands Development Tournament in 2019.

England Lacrosse would like to welcome Jasmine Waite to the organisation as part of our Communications Team on a freelance basis.

Jasmine will initially take a lead on content planning and creation on the England Lacrosse University Lacrosse Officer (ULO) Programme to help promote the work we do and engage further with the university sector.

Jasmine first picked up a lacrosse stick while studying at university in late 2017 and she immediately fell in love with the pace and skill of the game.

“Lacrosse is great both physically and mentally; you’re constantly predicting and reacting to the movements of your teammates which is nice as it keeps your mind alert. I also found the equality and camaraderie between the men’s and women’s teams at university really refreshing as well.”

From starting off as a player, Jasmine slowly transitioned into coaching and helped out with her university’s Engage and Just Play programmes where she co-ordinated development matches and promoted student participation in the sport at a entry/beginner level.

Then, in her final year as an undergraduate student, Jasmine became her university’s ULO which gave her the opportunity to learn more about lacrosse in the community and at a grassroots level.

“My university club was quite high-performance focused, so I was eager to support the grassroots recruitment of new players to develop and diversify the club before I graduated, and the ULO Programme was super helpful in facilitating that.

“For me, it was a nice alternative to taking on a more active committee role, as it allowed me to get involved in a wider lacrosse community, bigger than just my immediate team/club; I felt I was making more of an impact that way. Liaising with England Lacrosse directly and building connections with other ULOs was also really valuable and a good opportunity to develop some useful transferable skills before I graduated.”

After her initial graduation coincided with the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Jasmine made the decision to continue her studies where she developed a keen interest in communications and spent the first half of this year on a social media internship with a political monitoring firm, before starting as a freelancer with England Lacrosse in September.

Jasmine feels this new role with England Lacrosse is the ideal way to bring together her interests in a professional environment while also helping grow the game at a university level.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to combine my love of sport and writing, with a role in comms and content creation, while drawing on my own three-years of experience as a ULO.

“I’m looking forward to utilising that first-hand insight into the role to help evolve and expand the programme, but I’m mainly excited about capturing some fascinating stories for the website and not only helping to grow the profile of university lacrosse, but also highlighting its involvement in some important social campaigns too!”

Jasmine will always be on the look out for interesting stories that promote our sport within the university sector and is able to assist clubs/teams with upcoming events. She can be contacted at j.waite@englandlacrosse.co.uk.

We hope you will join us in welcoming Jasmine to the organisation!

Double delight for Nottingham at BUCS 6s Championships

University of Nottingham celebrated double success at Sunday’s 2022 BUCS Lacrosse 6s Championships winning both the men’s and women’s Championship titles.

The men’s side beat their city rivals Nottingham Trent 8-5 in the Championship final, before the women followed that win up with a victory of their own against Durham, 6-2, to take the Women’s Championship and retain the BUCS 6s crown they won in 2021.

30 teams competed at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus across the event with representation as far reaching as Exeter, University of East Anglia, and Newcastle.

In the trophy competition, Cardiff claimed a 9-2 win over Liverpool in the men’s tournament final, while Newcastle won a tight final 7-6 against Sheffield in the women’s competition.

Both Nottingham teams went through the competition with a 100% record, winning their groups comfortably to advance to the quarter-finals.

The women then beat Cardiff 8-3 in the QF before getting past Exeter in a tight semi-final, 5-4, to make it through to the final against Durham.

Meanwhile Nottingham rolled past Newcastle 12-1 in the quarters, to set up possibly the match of the day came against Durham in the semis.

Nottingham had led 6-4 at the half, but Durham fought back and the match went into golden goal overtime with the scores tied at 8-all, before Nottingham won the resuming face-off and scored the goal to send them through to the final against NTU.

Both teams will be keen to carry the form through back into their BUCS league campaigns as they seek success in the Northern Premier divisions.

England Lacrosse to support annual Rainbow Laces Campaign

England Lacrosse is proud, once again, to be supporting Stonewall’s annual Rainbow Laces Campaign that runs from 19 to 31 October.

Stonewall’s key message for this year is “inclusion has no off-season” and they are asking us all to play our part by holding conversations in our spaces about what we can all do to make sport everybody’s game.

The 2022 Campaign is taking place slightly earlier than usual to make space for the men’s football world cup which takes place in November with Rainbow Laces Day happening on Wednesday 26 October this time.

The Rainbow Laces Campaign, which was initially launched nine years ago in 2013, aims to raise awareness around LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport and, since its inception Stonewall has sent out over one million pairs of rainbow laces.

2022 saw the first openly gay player to come out in professional UK men’s football in over 30 years; the Lionesses became European Champions with seven openly queer players in the squad; over 40 openly LGBTQ+ athletes competed at this year’s Commonwealth Games; but for every success story, there are countless more untold stories of LGBTQ+ people who are forced to abandon their love of sports and fitness.

That's why Rainbow Laces is as important as ever - and we would love for you to get involved.

There’s many ways to support the campaign but the most prominent is to wear a pair of Stonewall’s laces which now come in the traditional rainbow colours as well as a variety which support specific branches of the LGBTQ+ umbrella including the lesbian, trans, bi, non-binary, pan, and asexual flags.

We’d love the lacrosse community to join in with this year’s campaign and assisting Stonewall with the hugely important work they do by grabbing your own pair of Rainbow Laces HERE.

New Greater Manchester Lacrosse Development Officer appointed

England Lacrosse pop-up banner on a pitch

England Lacrosse, in partnership with the North West Regional Lacrosse Association, is delighted to announce the appointment of Brin Kenyon as the new Greater Manchester Lacrosse Development Officer.

The Greater Manchester Lacrosse Development Officer is responsible for co-ordinating and delivering a range of lacrosse participation programmes within the Greater Manchester area and Brin starts the role with immediate effect.

Lacrosse has been a life-long passion for Brin having started playing for Ashton Lacrosse Club at the age of 10 before captaining the UCLan Lacrosse Club to their first ever win and undefeated league season while studying at university.

Brin currently plays for Wilmslow Lacrosse Club and is perfectly placed within the region to take up the Greater Manchester Lacrosse Development Officer role as he looks to provide support for the community lacrosse network.

Having first worked with England Lacrosse in 2021 as a Summer Lax Hub Manager and continuing on into 2022, Brin has had some experience and success in growing the sport within specific areas and England Lacrosse wishes him all the best as he begins his new role!

England finish Super Sixes with huge win against Haudenosaunee

England capped off their World Lacrosse Super Sixes campaign with an impressive 12-11 win over the Haudenosaunee Confederacy on Sunday.

A hat-trick from the experienced Megan Whittle kept England in the game before Julie Wise scored the eventual winner with just under a minute to go in the game to ensure the England team left the tournament with smiles on their faces.

After tasting defeat in their first three games of the competition, England started with determination in this final match-up and found themselves two goals to the good with Alice Ripper and Emily Gray getting themselves on the score-sheet.

No game against the Haudenosaunee Confederacy is easy and so it proved early on in the second quarter when the opposition pulled 3-2 ahead, taking advantage of being a player up to score twice and flip the game on its head.

But England weren’t about to give up just yet with Wise and Liv Thomas each firing one home to bring the scores back level at 4-4 with a couple of minutes left in the half.

It was an enthralling back and forth encounter but, as the game wore on, the Haudenosaunee showed their quality and despite goals from Whittle and Anna Saunter, they went in at the third quarter break enjoying a four-goal cushion with the score at 10-6.

Right at the start of the fourth and final quarter, the Haudenosaunee grabbed another goal giving England a huge mountain to climb if they were to get something from the game.

England refused to lie down despite trailing by five and went on an unbelievable six goal run without reply; goals from Gray, Anna Neville, Whittle, and Ripper put England within one goal before Head Coach, Phil Collier, called a timeout with one minute and 17 seconds left in the game.

And whatever Coach Collier said worked almost immediately as Whittle completed her hat-trick to level the score at 11-11 before Wise stole the ball in the middle of the field and scored with aplomb to put England ahead for the first time since the first quarter.

Right at the death, goalie Emilie Chandler made an outstanding save to keep the Haudenosaunee out and ensure England left Canada with a win!

After the tournament, World Lacrosse announced that Super Sixes will return next October in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Final Scores

Friday
Game 1 | Canada 10-6 England
Game 2 | Haudenosaunee 4-23 Canada

Game 3 | England 9-12 Haudenosaunee
Game 4 | Canada 15-8 England
Game 5 | Canada 8-9 Haudenosaunee

Take the England Lacrosse university lacrosse players survey

University lacrosse players in a huddle before BUCS 6s 2021

As the new university year begins, England Lacrosse is delighted to launch our bi-annual survey for all university lacrosse players designed to monitor and measure the personal well-being and social outcomes of lacrosse participants at university.

The survey will enable us to evidence the impact lacrosse participation has on students' well-being, mental health and future prospects.

The information provided by players who complete the survey will help England Lacrosse to understand the impact participating in lacrosse has on an individual’s well-being and social outcomes in the university environment and how we can adapt and develop the lacrosse offer at university to better serve the university lacrosse community.

You can answer the survey by clicking the button below and it should take no more than 10 minutes.

Please note, the survey will close on Sunday 23 October.

Wilmslow player to run Manchester Half-Marathon to raise money for Club

Wilmslow Lacrosse Club logo

A Wilmslow Lacrosse Club player is set to run in the Manchester Half-Marathon on Sunday to help raise funds for his Club.

Rick Caldwell, who has been involved with Wilmslow Lacrosse Club for 16 years since he first joined their under-12 team in 2006, is looking to crowd-fund £500 to help improve the Club’s junior section.

Rick is also hoping the money will be able to assist the Club in introducing more youngsters to the sport within the local community by helping to fund training sessions, match fees, and equipment.

Since 2016, the Manchester Half-Marathon has taken place every October, starting and finishing by Old Trafford football stadium, the home of Manchester United.

Over 15,000 runners have taken part in the Half-Marathon that “aims to truly represent all the wonderful people of Manchester, and celebrate [their] achievements”.

Rick is likely to start the Half-Marathon at some time between 08.55am and 09.54am as he looks to complete the 13.1 mile run that winds its way through Manchester City centre for the first time, passing famous Manchester landmarks such as the Midland Hotel, Manchester Central Library, and Manchester Opera House.

“I have so many good memories at Wilmslow”, Rick told England Lacrosse, “and I would like to help see more junior players come into the Club and develop themselves to play at a senior level”.

He went on to say: “Playing lacrosse and playing for Wilmslow has been a huge part of my life and I would like to help support the Club keep its tradition in introducing players to the sport, especially at a young age”.

If you’d like to donate to Rick’s JustGiving page, click the button below to give as much or as little as you can!

And if you or your child is interested in having a go at Wilmslow Lacrosse Club, you can contact them on Instagram @wilmslowlacrosseclub or head to their website HERE.
