School Challenge Cup to take place at Benenden School

Two girls compete at the School Challenge Cup in 2021

England Lacrosse is excited to announce the 2022 School Challenge Cup will now be staged at Benenden School, Kent.

The annual competition, which sees the top eight U19 teams from the year’s National Schools Lacrosse Championships battle it out to be the best of the best, will take place on Sunday 20 November.

The last three editions of the School Challenge Cup have been held at Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre, Aldershot, where the National Schools Lacrosse Championships has also been held for the same duration.

But, this year, the decision has been made to move the School Challenge Cup to Benenden which is a slightly smaller venue that can better accommodate the eight teams competing while also allowing lacrosse to be played in all weathers on their 4G pitch.

It is also a way of England Lacrosse connecting further and working collaboratively with our schools network and enabling schools to showcase their top quality facilities.

Reigning champions, St Catherine’s, who defeated Caterham in the final of last year’s tournament to take home the trophy, will be back to defend their title along with 2022 U19 National Schools Champions, Putney, Berkhamsted, Guildford, St Albans High School for Girls, St George’s Harpenden, St Swithun’s, and hosts, Benenden.

Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week graphic

England Lacrosse is proud to be supporting this year’s Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week taking place next week from 3 to 9 October 2022.

Formerly Parents in Sport Week, Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week is supported by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) and is designed to offer support and inform parents and carers about the role they can play in keeping their children safe in sports and activity settings.

Officially, the campaign will be running year-round to ensure parents and carers feel supported throughout the whole year but the Week will allow a more focused look at the support that is available to parents within the safeguarding area.

If you’re a parent or carer, the best way to get involved and support this year’s campaign is to:

  • take a look at the resources the CPSU has developed to help you to be a great sports parent in their parents' hub

  • take their updated e-learning course and learn how to keep your child safe

  • share their animation on social media to let other parents know about the campaign

  • talk about Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport on social media by using #SafeinSport and tagging @NSPCC and @TheCPSU

If you are worried about a child’s safety, the CPSU has a page with information about what you can do to help HERE or you can simply call the number below.

Southern Box Lacrosse launch new Winter Box League

Southern Box Lacrosse Winter Box League logo

Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) has launched its brand new Winter Box League due to start in December this year.

The League is the first of its kind in England and will take place over four game days throughout December and January, featuring four teams with players selected through a draft.

The 3G Dome at Oxford Academy that has played host to many SBL and England box events throughout the years will be the home of the Winter Box League that starts on Sunday 11 December.

Subsequent League fixtures will take place on Sunday 18 December, Sunday 8 January, and Sunday 15 January with fixtures starting at 1pm and finishing at 5pm on each of those days.

The Winter Box League is all part of SBL’s push for more box lacrosse throughout England in the wake of the England box lacrosse team becoming European Champions in the summer and comes after the inaugural and hugely successful Box Fest earlier this month.

Applications are already open to be a team coach or team manager at the Winter Box League and you have until Sunday 16 October to put your name in the hat; more details about applications can be found HERE.

It is anticipated SBL will open player applications in early October with the draft taking place later in the month.

In addition to the new League, SBL is also hosting more women’s and general box sessions with more details of those sessions coming soon.

Stockport retain title at 2022 Stockport September Sixes

Stockport men's team who won Stockport September Sixes 2022

Stockport Lacrosse Club came out on top for the second year running as they defeated Heaton Mersey 8-7 in the men’s final at the 2022 Stockport September Sixes.

After overcoming Cheadle Hulme and City of Stoke in their respective semi-finals, Stockport and Heaton Mersey played out a fascinating final, eventually won with just a minute left on the clock by Stockport.

In the women’s final, Oxton blew away Loughborough, eventually coming away with a 13-4 win to take home the women’s title.

The tournament, which took place over Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, was the second edition of the event which also showcased the very best lacrosse from around the north of England across six age groups.

On the Saturday, the junior teams took centre stage with the boys U12, U14, U16, girls U13 and U15 competitions taking place.

In the boys U12 and U16 tournaments, Heaton Mersey did what their senior team mates were unable to do and win their respective final matches while Stockport took home the boys U14 trophy.

In the girls section, Timperley won the U15 competition staying unbeaten all day and beating Heaton Mersey in the final while the spoils were shared after a full four-quarter game between Stockport and Heaton Mersey ended in a draw.

As with all events like the Stockport September Sixes, the volunteers are the unsung heroes and it isn’t easy to run a new competition with a new format for several age categories over one weekend. So to all those who gave up their entire weekend (including Friday in some cases), Stockport, England Lacrosse, and the sport as a whole is thankful!

You can watch some of the games from the Stockport September Sixes in full on Lacrosse Live UK HERE.

Box Fest a roaring success as Capitals take home inaugural title

The Capitals' team line up for a photo after their Box Fest win

England’s Dave Groves scored the winning goal as his Capitals side beat Thundercats 5-4 to win the very first Box Fest title in Oxford on Sunday.

After a jam-packed day full of box lacrosse, Capitals and Thundercats both headed into the final on the back of four wins each.

It was a tight final with neither side hugely dominant but England man, Dave Groves, who was part of this summer’s European Championship-winning England box team, made the difference with two goals edging his Capitals team over the line to win the title.

Planned as a fully inclusive box lacrosse event giving anyone and everyone the chance to experience this format of the game, the main competition welcomed eight women’s players in to the mix across the four teams, something not seen in England before.

Mid-way through the day, and after a minute’s silence to mark the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, a dedicated women’s session was held led by experienced coach, Rob Clark, and assisted by David McColl, Conor Dockery, and David Leach.

A total of 19 women took part in the session that included players who had taken part in previous Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) sessions as well as some box lacrosse novices.

It’s certainly an exciting time to be a part of the box lacrosse community with more SBL women’s sessions on the horizon and Capitals travelling to Lille, France, for the annual Box Mania tournament in November.

And, perhaps most excitingly, a brand new domestic box league will start in England in the winter, taking place on Sundays throughout December and January at the 3G Dome in Oxford!

More details including the format of the league will be announced in due course.

World Lacrosse makes case for 2026 Commonwealth Games inclusion

Bella Bowater chasing down Anna Neville at The Fly 2022

World Lacrosse has formally lodged an Expression of Interest to the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for the inclusion of World Lacrosse Sixes in the Victoria 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games.

The Expression of Interest was submitted by Chief Executive Officer of World Lacrosse, Jim Sherr, in August on behalf of World Lacrosse, The Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union, and Lacrosse Australia under the Phase Two intake of sports for the Games.

The submission introduced World Lacrosse Sixes as the discipline of choice for inclusion in the 2026 Commonwealth Games; this discipline was developed by World Lacrosse to support and accelerate the continued growth of lacrosse worldwide.

This latest submission comes after World Lacrosse received International Olympic Committee full recognition in 2021 and launched their LAX28 campaign last month with a view to being included in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

Gaining momentum since its launch in 2020, the sixes format of the game has already been featured at several events around the world, including The World Games, The Fly, the EuroLax Sixes Cup and many more!

Box Fest schedule, teams, and captains announced

Southern Box Lacrosse to host Box Fest this Sunday 18 September

Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) has announced its schedule for, as well as the four teams taking part in, this weekend’s first ever Box Fest event.

With games taking place every 30 minutes, the event will see Capitals, Knights, Hitchin/Oxford, and Steelheads battle it out to become the inaugural Box Fest champions at the home of box lacrosse in the south of England, the 3G Dome at Oxford Academy, on Sunday 18 September.

Primarily aimed as a development event, the four teams will each play six games consisting of two 10-minute halves, before a third place game and a final to complete the day.

Mid-way through the day, there will be a dedicated women’s-specific box lacrosse coaching session, led by SBL coach, Rob Clark, but women are also welcome to join the main competition too!

The event is designed to be as inclusive as possible with box lacrosse first-timers mixing with some of the 2022 European Box Lacrosse Championship winning England team; the European Championship trophy will be on show with plenty of opportunity for people to take pictures.

Earlier this week, SBL also announced the captains and assistant captains for each team with Sam Perry leading Capitals assisted by Ben Young and David McColl, Alan Keeley heading up Knights with Primal Fernando by his side, Rob Ingham Clark taking the armband for Steelheads alongside Austin Holgate and Rob Harris, and Russ Farrer captaining Hitchin/Oxford with David Leach as his assistant.

Box Fest is a precursor for a planned SBL Winter Box Lacrosse League running out of Oxford this December and January; the new league aims to attract the best box players in the country, competing within four teams, over four Sunday game days.

If you’re interested in taking part in this year’s Box Fest, there’s still time to sign up via the SBL website HERE at a cost of £30 or £15 to attend only the women's-specific session (additional box lacrosse equipment is available to hire via SBL, selectable when the entry fee is paid).

National Lacrosse Day 2022 - Megan's Story

NLD – Megan’s Story

With just a few days to go until National Lacrosse Day on Saturday, in the next of our ‘Lax for All’ stories we spoke to New Zealand international lacrosse player, Megan Archer, who now lives and plays the game in England, about playing for her country whilst living on the other side of the world.

When and where did you first start playing lacrosse?

I started playing Lacrosse when I was about 13 years old at my school in New Zealand - Whangaparaoa College!

What made you start playing lacrosse?

I was already quite sporty - playing netball, cross country running & a bit of athletics but one of my friends convinced me to give it a go and I fell in love with the sport - a life changing moment for sure!

Who has been the biggest influence in your lacrosse career to date?

I had some excellent coaches early on across all my sports - Jason Pocock, Lynda Hay, Guy Baldwin, G Scott to name a few. The influence they’ve had on me is less to do with skill but more to do with discipline, mindset, and what it takes to become a world class athlete.

I’ve also had the privilege of playing with and against many other international players, especially since I moved to the UK. They inspired me to train harder, smarter and try new things so I can compete with them on the world stage.

Where do you play lacrosse now, and for whom?

I play for and Vice Captain Centaurs Lacrosse Club in London. I joined there when I moved over in 2017. I’ve also played mixed lacrosse for the Home Nations Lions which really helped my World [Championship] build up, and for London City Panthers on the odd occasion (including this weekend at the Compton Cup!).

Have you come up against any challenges so far in your lacrosse career, and if so, what were they?

My most recent challenge was around training for the 2022 World Championship. Living in the UK but wanting to represent NZ, it involved a lot of Friday late night zoom calls to join their training camps (because of the time difference.)

I also struggled to feel like I was doing enough since I wasn’t with the team so jumped at any opportunity to play lacrosse. I Learnt the hard way that quality is more important than quantity when training for a WC! But on the flip side, since moving to the UK I’ve played different versions of the game and against so many different types of players which I was able to use to my advantage at the WC.

What aspects of lacrosse do you love the most?

Definitely the people! It’s a wonderful, global community. Moving to another country on the other side of the world was huge for me but I’ve made friends for life through Lacrosse. In terms of the game itself, the midfield running is probably my favourite part… crazy I know.

Spencer and Blues win Ken Galluccio Cup

Spencer team lifting the Ken Galluccio Cup in 2022

Spencer and Blues Lacrosse Clubs ensured a clean sweep for the English teams at the 2022 Ken Galluccio Cup over the weekend as they brought home the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

Both teams left the Camps Municipals La Teixonera-Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, Spain with 100 per cent records after winning every game they competed in.

Spencer defeated Frankfurt 9-4 in a tight men’s final before Blues took on close rivals Edinburgh University in the women’s final, defeating the Scottish team 19-4 to win the Cup.

On Friday, Spencer got the English teams underway in the men’s competition as they took on Brussels Beavers in their first group stage game.

And it was as straightforward a win as can be seen with Will Walker and Tom Leahy grabbing themselves a hat-trick each to help Spencer on their way to a comfortable 11-0 victory.

In their second and final group stage fixture on Saturday morning, Spencer were equally prolific, eventually winning 12-1 with another Walker hat-trick helping them on their way to victory.

Two wins out of two in the group stage meant a quarter-final match-up with Sundbyberg Lacrosse who were also unbeaten at the tournament after beating Oslo Saints and Amsterdam Lions in their group games.

But Spencer were able to make light work of the team from Sweden, emerging 10-2 victors with the help from another two goals from Walker as well as three from Sam Hewitt.

Lacrosse Jižní Město awaited Spencer in the semi-final on Sunday looking extend their impressive run at the competition that had seen them draw with Amsterdam Lions in their first group stage match before demolishing Madrid Osos and Vienna Monarchs 12-1 and 11-1 respectively on their way to the semis.

The team from Czech Republic caused some problems for Spencer early on forcing a goal-less first quarter but the English team grew in confidence as the game wore on, eventually conceding just once in a 12-1 win that also saw hat-tricks for Tom Bracegirdle and Ben Buchanan.

On Sunday afternoon, Spencer stepped onto the field to take on Frankfurt in the final of the 2022 Ken Galluccio Cup which proved to be their toughest test of the competition.

But the result was never really in doubt as Spencer were able to keep ahead of their opponents throughout the contest despite four closely fought quarters.

And four huge goals from Bracegirdle helped Spencer over the line and join the list of English teams to have claimed victory at the Ken Galluccio Cup!

In the women’s competition, Blues started with aplomb on Saturday morning against Ghent Gazelles, defeating the team from Belgium 13-0, with five goals from Liv Wimpenny as well as a hat-trick each from Alex Drewe and Bex Jordache.

Immediately after that first group-stage game, Blues were back on the field taking on Graz Gladiators who they blew away with equal ease, coming out 12-1 victors, this time with hat-tricks apiece for Wimpenny, Drewe, and Nancy Day.

Heading into the quarter-final, Blues’ confidence was sky-high but they were about to come up against Oslo Pandas who had lost one and won one in their group-stage games against LCC Radotín and Madrid Osos.

And, despite a tight second half that saw Blues come out on top by just one goal, the English team had done enough in the first to see out a 12-5 victory with Drewe bagging another hat-trick for her team.

The competition was hotting up as it entered its latter stages and Blues’ semi-final against LCC Radotín proved to be a tricky one for them to overcome.

But, once again, a quick start ensured a 3-0 first quarter win which helped Blues to an eventual 9-6 win along with three goals for Laura Beaman and two more for Drewe to set up a mouth-watering final match with Edinburgh University.

And Blues really turned it on as they vied for victory against their rivals from across the border with a prolific turn from Drewe and Wimpenny once again who both scored four as Blues claimed the Ken Galluccio Cup with a 19-4 win.
