Sam Patterson appointed new England Men's Head Coach

England Lacrosse is delighted to announce the appointment of Sam Patterson as Head Coach of the England Men’s Performance Squad.

Patterson takes charge off the back of a successful coaching career across club, university, and international level, following an equally distinguished playing stint spanning more than 20 years.

Since 2016, he has been Head of Lacrosse at Nottingham Trent University, overseeing the transformation of the institution’s lacrosse programme to firmly establish NTU as one of the top lacrosse programmes in the country.

Patterson has taken the NTU Men’s performance squad to the BUCS National Championship final five years in a row, claiming the title in both 2018 and 2023.

He has also had success with the Women’s performance squad, leading the programme to the top tier of BUCS lacrosse, as well as picking up the BUCS National Trophy in 2022.

In addition to team success on the field, through his time at NTU he has also overseen the individual player development of a number of England internationals and will now pick up those relationships again in his new role.

As a player, Patterson is one of the most decorated players in the history of England Lacrosse.

He represented England in a remarkable four Senior World Championships from 2006-2018, is a three-time European Championship gold medal winner and has won numerous trophies playing for club side Stockport.

Following his international playing career, Patterson soon also transitioned into international level coaching, serving as an Assistant Coach to the Men’s Performance Squad from 2019-2022, building on the experience gained coaching throughout the England Academy system.

Patterson’s first outing following the appointment is set to be at April’s Home Internationals tournament in Cardiff, before looking ahead to the upcoming 2025 European Championships.

Derek Morgan, England Lacrosse National Performance Manager, said: “Sam is a highly respected figure within the English game and following his international playing career, has now proven himself to be one of the most talented coaches around.

“He has significant major tournament experience as a player and has worked as a coach on both our Talent Pathway system and as a senior Assistant Coach to develop his top-level coaching knowledge.

“Additionally, his impressive track record at NTU has demonstrated his ability to create a cohesive, structured programme that has delivered positive results on a consistent basis.

“The Men’s Performance programme has a strong core of young, talented athletes and we see Sam as someone who will be able to nurture that talent, while also creating a clear vision and identity for the programme moving forward.”

On his appointment, Sam Patterson said: “This is a huge privilege and honour to be given the responsibility to take the England team forward in this exciting time in our sports history.

“This undoubtably will be the biggest challenge in my coaching career to date, but one I am laser focused on ensuring will be a successful period for our national team.

“We are blessed with a fantastic group of players, and I am really excited to start working with them. This is very much a busy time for our players with more lacrosse commitments than ever before, so I will be working in close collaboration with all our national team formats, junior teams, and the academy.

“I also want to convey to the players my first priority is to create the best possible environment for them, give them clarity and buy-in of the process we are about to embark on together, and build a highly competitive team we can all be proud of and get behind ahead of the European Championships, and onward to the World Championships in Japan in 2027.”

England Women announce 2024 Performance and Development squads

England U20 women take on top level opposition ahead of World Championship

For the past week, the England women’s under-20 World Championship training squad has been on tour in Florida, USA taking on top level opposition as they continue to prepare for the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in August.

The 29-player training squad travelled across the pond with four coaches, including Head Coach Vic Alexander, and took part in a programme of training sessions and scrimmages against American college teams.

The tour allowed the players to experience a performance environment similar to the one they’ll find at the World Championship in Hong Kong, China.

It also exposed the players to high-level situations against top quality NCAA athletes who are on the verge of their 2024 college seasons, allowing our England coaches to see how the players cope under pressure and in different match situations.

England played five scrimmages in total against the University of South Florida (x2), Florida Southern College, Florida Institute of Technology, and the University of Tampa, with players rotated throughout matches in line with the wider training schedule.

Despite five losses, including a narrow 14-12 defeat to Florida Institute of Technology, the players and coaches have learned a lot and come away with some invaluable experiences ahead of the World Championship.

The players have been able to build stronger bonds across the squad both on and off the field and the team has made some important connections with lacrosse players from the United States.

Following the tour to Florida, the squad will continue to work hard in training sessions with the next big milestone being the annual Home Internationals Series in early April before the final 22-player World Championship squad is announced shortly after.

England teams discover E-Box opponents

The England men’s box World Championship training squad will take on Finland, Czech Republic, and a touring Canadian team at the 2024 E-Box event in Prague, Czechia in April.

At the parallel She-Box event, the England women’s World Championship training squad, making their debut appearance at 2024 competition, will play matches against Hong Kong, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, and a Women’s Global Network team.

Taking place from 19-22 April, the tournaments mark a significant test for both England teams as they continue their preparations ahead of the first ever joint men’s and women’s World Lacrosse Box Championship in Utica, NY, USA in September.

For the men, their game against Finland will be the first competitive match-up with the Nordic team since the 2019 World Championship play-in match that ended with a 15-6 England win.

Their following game against the hosts, Czechia, sees England come up against their 2022 European Championship semi-final opponents; in that match, England claimed a narrow 13-12 victory on their way to European Championship glory.

Over in the women’s competition, the 2024 She-Box event marks England’s first ever competitive international games with four of England’s opponents also being involved in the World Championship.

It will be the first chance for Head Coach, Rob Clark, to see his players in competitive action before he slim-lines his squad ahead of the World Championship in September.

At last year’s E-Box event, England men won two out of their three games defeating Switzerland 14-5 and Norway 24-3 either side of a 13-8 loss to fellow European Championship finalists Germany.

Southern Box Lacrosse’s Ravens represented England at last year’s She-Box event bringing home the trophy after winning three of their four games.

World Lacrosse awards three world championships to Korea and Japan

World Lacrosse today announced the hosting rights to three upcoming world championships, with the 2025 Men’s U20 Championship officially awarded to Korea, and the 2026 Women’s Championship and 2027 Men’s Championship awarded to Japan.

Korea will host its first world championship, as the eighth edition of the men’s U20 championship will be held in mainland Asia for the first time in its history. The event will be held in Seoguipo on Jeju Island from 18-25 July 2025.

Japan hosted the women’s championship in 1997 and as the 12th edition of the event returns to Japan, it joins the United States and England as multi-time hosts. Japan will host the men’s championship for the first time in its 15th edition, and joins a group of Australia, Canada, England and the United States that have hosted both the men’s and women’s championships.

The 2026 and 2027 events in Japan are each expected to take place in July, with a specific location that will host both championships to be announced at a later date. It will mark the first time the men’s and women’s championships have been held in the same city in consecutive years, a sustainable and equitable approach for World Lacrosse events.

World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr said:

“We are thrilled to award these championships to Korea and Japan, two of our model members that are both ready to stage world-class events in incredible cities. With our upcoming women’s U20 championship, we will have four championships in four years in Asia, which reflects how the game has grown at a breathtaking speed. I am excited for our global community to experience firsthand why the region is a new epicenter of lacrosse.”

Japan has been a member of World Lacrosse since 1990 and Korea has been a member since 1995. Both organisations were founding members of the Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union in 2004, which has grown to 19 members.

Jeju Island is known as “The Honeymoon Island” of Asia, and a hub for Korea’s fast-growing passion for sports and culture. The island is accessible with an international airport and Korea previously hosted the 2017 Asia Pacific Lacrosse Championship in Seogwipo with six men’s teams and five women’s teams competing, as well as the 2022 APLU Qualifier for the 2023 Men’s Championship with six teams in attendance.

Japan has hosted many major international sports events, including recent editions of the Olympic Games and Rugby World Cup in recent years. The country boasts the world’s largest city and exceptional public infrastructure, including transportation, accommodations and a variety of sports facilities, as well as world-famous sightseeing destinations.

The three events will conclude the current four-year cycle of World Lacrosse Championships beginning in 2024 before the sport is contested at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

Ken Haves | Obituary

England Lacrosse pop-up banner and flutter flag on the pitch at Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre

England Lacrosse is saddened to learn of the death of lifelong lacrosse supporter and volunteer, Ken Haves, after a long illness.

Ken started his lacrosse-playing career at Urmston Lacrosse Club in Greater Manchester where he eventually became Club Administrator making vital contributions to both Urmston and lacrosse in the north of England.

He was a member of the North of England Lacrosse Association (NELA) Disciplinary Committee, organiser of North of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (NEMLA) Presentation dinners, Lancashire Secretary, and finally Lancashire President.

After Urmston Lacrosse Club folded in the early 1990s, Ken joined Hulmeians Lacrosse Club and was a part of the group that joined Brooklands in 1996.

After that, Ken continued his wider contribution to northern lacrosse as Treasurer of NEMLA and then the North West Lacrosse Association (NWLA).

From 2000 onwards, Ken was greatly involved in the annual Flags Festival at Rochdale Lacrosse Club, masterminding the ticketing, gate, and finalists’ medals.

At Brooklands, Ken served as Chief Bench Official (CBO) for all the senior teams in all weathers and in the summertime he could be seen on the balcony watching cricket and trying his hand at croquet.

The ultimate club volunteer, Ken died peacefully at home on 11 January 2024.

England Lacrosse sends our condolences to Ken’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Club Focus | Leeds Lacrosse Club

Club Focus | Leeds Lacrosse Club

Throughout the 2023/24 domestic season, we’ll be highlighting a different club each month to showcase the great work being done in the community by clubs around the country and our club for January is Leeds Lacrosse Club.

Founded in 2007 by a small group of Leeds University alumni who wanted to continue playing lacrosse after they graduated, Leeds Lacrosse has grown steadily over the past 17 years and comprises one men’s team.

That team currently competes in North of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (NEMLA) competitions, one of just two single team clubs to do so.

Leeds’ short-term aim is to continue to recruit players who live in the local area and grow the club sustainably; like many lacrosse clubs, Leeds was severely impacted by COVID-19 with much of their energies over the past two seasons being focused on bringing player numbers back to pre-pandemic levels.

So far, this season has been a real success in terms of participation numbers and that is something they want to continue as they head into the summer and towards the 2024/25 season.

Being a club with just one team means they are, and have always been, a very mixed-ability side, with new-comers often lining up alongside players with international experience.

That is something they are extremely proud of as one of their mantras is to be open and inclusive to anyone who wants to play lacrosse no matter their ability with a stick in their hands.

With the club being a modest size, Leeds are running without a dedicated Head Coach at present and senior members of the team have been sharing the coaching responsibilities between them.

The use of a coaching rota has proved successful to take any shortcomings on the field on a Saturday and try to solve them at training on a Monday.

Although this system has been working for them during recent months, they welcome interest from any coaches out there who are looking to volunteer their expertise in West Yorkshire!

Leeds believe they’ve managed to strike the perfect balance between being competitive on the lacrosse pitch and being a social, friendly, and welcoming bunch.

They are committed to improving their standard week on week but consider themselves a more beginner-friendly club since a huge number of their players picked up the sport at university-level or later and understand what it’s like to pick up a new sport as an adult.

And when it comes to social events, Leeds believe they do it better than anyone else with the city being home to “Britain’s best pub crawl” (their words), the Otley Run.

Their Christmas and end of season socials have always been popular as well and they’re looking to host bigger socials in the future as the club continues to grow.

This includes more mixed events with Leeds Lacrosse’s women’s team, Leeds Penguins, as they look to continue building that relationship after a successful shuffleboard social in the summer.

Originally based in Harrogate, Leeds Penguins relocated to Leeds in 2003 and has one senior ladies’ team. They welcome new players of all abilities with their aim being to create a fun and friendly environment for new and old players to come and enjoy playing lacrosse while building the awareness of the sport in the local area.

They believe that what makes them stand out is their friendly, welcoming players, with other teams often commenting on how nice they are to each other!

Looking to the future, they are always on the lookout for new players, and they, like the men’s team, would love to be able to invest in having their own coach.

As Leeds Lacrosse Club start to plan for the long-term future, they have their eyes on the creation of a second men’s team as well as earning themselves some silverware à la the Leeds teams of the past.

Off the field, they want to continue to champion lacrosse in the region and ensure people know there is lacrosse after university in Leeds with an ultimate aim of making West Yorkshire a hub of lacrosse just like that seen across the Pennines in South Manchester.

Men’s Team Captain, Adam Rogers, who joined Leeds in the summer of 2020, couldn’t believe his luck when he found such a fantastic and welcoming club.

"I started playing lacrosse at the University of Leeds and instantly fell in love with the physicality, tactics, and pace of the game, with the people I played alongside making the experience even better.

“I joined Leeds Lacrosse alongside university to continue improving as a player and to get as much experience as I could.

“It’s always a bit nervy joining a new team, but joining Leeds couldn’t have been easier. The lads made me feel right at home, and I know I’d have been made to feel equally welcome even if I’d never held a stick before.

“Cut to three years later as Captain and, quite frankly, I still couldn’t think of a better bunch to turn out with every Saturday afternoon to play the sport we all love."

Club Social Media Secretary, James Hutchinson, joined the club in 2021 after moving to Leeds and he says it was one of the best decisions he’s made.

"I've been playing lacrosse since my first year at the University of Nottingham in 2014, looking to try something a bit different.

“After my graduation, I continued to play and when I moved to Leeds in 2021, I was made aware that there was a club in West Yorkshire by a former team mate of mine.

“Moving to a new area is always difficult, but the boys welcomed me straight away and made me feel at home in Leeds - both the lacrosse club and the city.

“Now in my third season, I can say I've formed some fantastic friendships at the club which extend beyond the time we spend on the field together."

Leeds Penguins Co-Captain, Ellen Slay, absolutely loves playing for the Leeds Penguins.

“I’ve been playing lacrosse since school; the England goalie (at that time) was my coach and she inspired me to play!

“When I moved to Leeds, I was keen to continue playing and the Penguins were a delightful, welcoming bunch of players who made me feel like one of their own as soon as I attended training.

“I love the ethos and mentality of the Penguins! It is the most welcoming club I have ever played for; every individual is valued for what they bring to the team.”

Leeds Lacrosse Club trains at Adel Sport and Social Club, Leeds on Mondays (6:30pm-8pm) where it also plays its matches predominantly on a Saturday.

Leeds Penguins also train on Monday evenings at Adel Sports Club with matchdays on Saturdays; as the only team based in the Northeast, they spend many fun car journeys heading over the M62 to take part in the Northwest League.

Anyone wanting to get involved in the club as a player, coach, or volunteer can contact Leeds Lacrosse Club on Instagram HERE or by emailing mens@leedslacrosse.co.uk; those wanting to get involved with Leeds Penguins should contact them through Instagram HERE.

For more information about the club, you can also check out their website HERE.

Triple Arrow Camps will take place at Queen Anne’s School, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Withington Girls’ School, St Swithun’s School, and St George’s School throughout March and April.

Six Triple Arrow Camps have already been confirmed for summer 2024 with camps being held at Charterhouse School, Queen Anne’s School, St Swithun’s School, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, St George’s School, and Withington Girls’ School during July and August.

The only official England Lacrosse holiday camps, Triple Arrow Camps is led, administered, and regulated by the National Governing Body.

The camps bring together girls from between 10 and 16 years old to fun and friendly environments where they can be inspired by some of the top lacrosse coaches in the country, including many current and ex-national team players.

Aiming to ensure every child finishes their camp experience having developed as a lacrosse player and can pride themselves in their progression, Triple Arrow Camps has dedicated group leads, meaning coaches have ample time to get to know the players and identify personal focus areas.

Super Sakurai fires Blaze to victory at 2023 Winter Box League

Blaze lift 2023 Winter Box League trophy after victory over Ravens

Miho Sakurai scored eight goals as she helped her Blaze team to a 16-9 victory over Ravens in the final game of the Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) women’s Winter Box League.

The win saw Blaze overcome Ravens in the first ever women’s edition of the competition and win the four-game series 3-1.

Other notable performers in the women’s final match were Lauren Lewis, who chipped in with four goals for Blaze, and Izzy Keane (Ravens) who added four goals to the six she had already scored in the first three games.

In the men’s competition, Knights retained the trophy they first won last year after a narrow 7-6 win over high-flyers Hornets in the final.

Hornets were unbeaten in this year’s Winter Box League before the final match and had even beaten Knights 4-3 in the group stage on the opening day.

But reigning champions Knights proved too strong in the final despite scoring in just two of the four quarters, with Tom Bracegirdle and Rob Harris each hitting a brace.

Ollie Allsop, representing Hornets this year, is certainly one to watch in the future as he rounded off his Winter Box League debut with two goals to take his total for the season to 10.

Steelheads claimed third spot after seeing out a tense third place play-off match against Capitals, winning by a single goal and being helped along by the ever-dependable goal-scorer Louis Alhage who hit seven.

Ben Buchanan and Andy Thomas both scored hat-tricks in that one for Steelheads with Sam Perry and Jamie Powell doing the same for Capitals.
