Mellor retain Bath Eights men's title; Cheltenham Cougars take home women's trophy

Mellor retained the Bath Eights men’s trophy after defeating Loughborough University Alumni 5-4 in the 2024 final on Saturday while Cheltenham Cougars picked up their first women’s title with a 2-1 victory over hosts Bath, maintaining the incredible record of no team having won the trophy more than once.

The 5-4 final win for Mellor means the Greater Manchester side have now claimed four Bath Eights men’s titles and sit third in the all-time list of winners after Cheadle and Wilmslow (both on six titles) and Sheffield and Timperley (both on five titles).

In the women’s competition, Cheltenham Cougars picked up their first title in the seventh edition of the tournament after a close 2-1 final victory over Bath.

That result means that no team has retained the Bath Eights women’s title or even won the trophy more than once since its inception in 2017.

By reaching the final, Bath’s women’s team became the first Bath team (men or women) in the history of the Bath Eights tournament to progress past the quarter-final stage; they reached the final by defeating 2023 winners Cirencester with a sudden-death over-time win after a 4-4 draw in regular time in the semi-final.

A total of 58 teams took part across the men’s and women’s competitions this year, making it one of the biggest editions of the event in its 37 year history.

37th Bath Eights to take place on Saturday

The 37th Bath Eights tournament is set to take place this Saturday 7 September with over 55 teams from all over the country taking part.

Taking place at Bath’s Odd Down Sports Fields, reigning men’s champions Mellor will be back searching for a fourth title while 2023 women’s winners Cirencester will return looking to become the first team to win back-to-back women’s titles at the seventh edition of the competition.

After holding its first event in 1986, the men’s Bath Eights tournament quickly established itself as the lacrosse season opener with teams from north, south, east, and west taking part.

Teams from the north of the country have traditionally fared best in the men’s competition with 33 of the 37 titles going to teams from that region.

In 2017, a women’s tournament was also introduced, which has since proven a hugely competitive competition, with no team winning the title twice with Stockport (2017), Bristol Bombers (2018), Bath University (2019), Godolphin School (2021), Wilmslow (2022), and Cirencester (2023) all picking up the women’s trophy since its inception.

Timperley & Godolphin School Win 2021 Bath Eights

Timperley & Godolphin School Win 2021 Bath Eights

Timperley Lacrosse Club and Godolphin School came out on top to win the respective 2021 men’s and women’s Bath Eights competitions on Saturday.

Going ahead for the first time since 2019 after the coronavirus pandemic forced last year’s tournament to be cancelled, the 2021 Bath Eights saw 29 men’s and 13 women’s teams battle it out for the coveted title.

It was Timperley who finished as winners of the men’s competition after defeating Nottingham Trent University in the men’s final.

Timperley have now won the Bath 8s men’s title five times putting them in joint second just behind Sheffield Low-Profilers/Steelers (six) in the list of all-time winners along with close geographic rivals Cheadle and Wilmslow.

And, in the biggest women’s competition to date, Godolphin School were able to overcome 2019 winners Bath University in their final to secure the title and ensure that no team has won the trophy more than once since the women’s tournament was founded five years ago.

England Lacrosse Official Partner, Net World Sports, attended the Bath Eights after donating some of their equipment to Bath Lacrosse Club for use in the competition as well as gifting a free coaching folder to each team taking part.

Next year’s Bath Eights tournament has already been given the green light and will go ahead on Saturday 3 September 2022.

First Bath Eights Since 2019 Takes Place on Saturday

Saturday sees the welcome return of the Bath Eights competition after a break of two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The traditional lacrosse season opener will take place at Odd Down Sports Field, Bath, home of Bath Lacrosse Club on 4th September and will be the 4th and 35th editions of the women’s (six-a-side) and men’s competition respectively.

2019 winners of the men’s and women’s Bath Eights, Hillcroft Lacrosse Club and Bath University, will be competing again and looking to defend their titles.

Hillcroft will be joined by 31 other teams in the men’s tournament while Bath will compete against 15 other teams in a battle to be crowned Bath Eights 2021 champions.

Previous winners of the men’s competition include Sheffield (x6), Timperley (x4), and Cheadle (x5) with Stockport, Bristol Bombers, and Bath University being the three winners of the women’s edition.

All funds raised from the event go towards the club development fund at Bath Lacrosse Club, which continues to help grow the sport in the local area.

Registration Opens for Annual Bath Eights Tournament

Registration Opens for Annual Bath Eights Tournament

Bath Lacrosse Club have opened the registration for the 2021 edition of their annual Bath Eights tournament, taking place on 4 September this year.

After last year’s event was cancelled due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, the organisers are excited to open registration for this year’s competition and are confident, given the Government’s roadmap to ease restrictions, that the tournament will be able to go ahead in September.

The Bath Eights tournament is the traditional lacrosse season opener and dates back to 1986 when Low Profilers (Sheffield) won the men’s competition.

A women’s six-as-side version of the tournament is now into its fourth year having been won in previous years by Stockport, Bristol Bombers, and Bath University.

Hillcroft Lacrosse Club are the reigning men’s champions and all funds raised from the event go towards the club development fund at Bath Lacrosse Club, which continues to help grow the sport in the local area.

Each year, the event goes from strength to strength and this year’s competition is sure to be a fantastic occasion after not being able to play much lacrosse for the past year.

Under the current Government and England Lacrosse guidance, the Bath Eights tournament would not be able to take place; however, Bath Lacrosse Club are hopeful, given the Government’s roadmap to ease restrictions, that the tournament will be allowed to go ahead come September.

With this in mind, Bath Lacrosse Club will be following any and all coronavirus restrictions that may be in place at the time of the event and you can read more about the current restrictions HERE.
