Guildford High take home the 2022 School Challenge Cup trophy

Guildford High School School Challenge Cup winning team

Guildford High School overcame the 2022 National Schools Lacrosse Championships U19A champions, Putney High School, 6-3 in the final of the 2022 School Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Goals from Elizabeth Morris, Sara Duncan, Sophia Rodzianko, Olivia Finnigan, Gabby Roberts, and Ailsa Scott ensured Guildford improved on their semi-final showing at the National Schools Lacrosse Championships earlier this year to take home the School Challenge Cup trophy against a strong Putney side.

With the scores locked at 2-2 at the half-time break, there was nothing to split to two sides but Guildford came out after the break and put themselves 4-2 up with goals from Rodzianko and Finnigan.

But Putney ensured a nervy ending to the final as they made it a one-goal game with just eight minutes left on the clock after a superb effort from Littlehales.

In the end, it was Guildford’s quality that shone through as two late goals from Roberts and Scott saw their team edge the contest 6-3 and take the trophy home.

Elsewhere in the competition, it took an incredible five periods of over-time to separate St Catherine’s and Berkhamsted in the 3rd place play-off after the score sat at 4-4 at the end of normal time; Jemma Thomson scoring the eventual winner to secure Berkhamsted third spot.

Benenden blew St Albans away in the 5th place play-off, eventually winning 9-4 with Katie McLeod hitting five to send her team home in fifth.

And St Swithun’s grabbed themselves a seventh place finish after coming out on top in their 7th place play-off match-up with St George’s; five goals from Rose Symonds and a goal from each of Mimi Tirado and Lucia Wall ensured a 7-2 victory.
