IOC confirms number of lacrosse teams to play at LA28

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed a total number of 12 teams will play in the lacrosse tournaments at the LA28 Olympic Games in three years’ time.

Six men’s and six women’s teams will take part in the two competitions as lacrosse makes its return to the Olympic stage after last appearing almost 80 years ago in 1948.

Lacrosse has been allocated a quota of 132 athletes, or 66 athletes per competition, with each qualifying country eligible to take a squad of 11 players to Los Angeles.

World Lacrosse is still yet to confirm exactly how teams will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games but news is expected over the next few months.

Great British teams will be hoping to be involved in the final Olympic competition having both finished fourth in the respective women’s and men’s tournaments at The World Games in 2022 which features sports that are not contested at the Olympics.

The news comes just days after World Lacrosse confirmed that The Stadium in Exposition Park will be the venue for the lacrosse tournaments during the 2028 Olympics.

More information about LA28 can be found at LA28.org while World Lacrosse will continue to provide updates on the Olympic journey here.

Spencer take on Camden on SEMLA Flags Finals Day this weekend

The 2024/25 South of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (SEMLA) season comes to an end this Saturday as the annual Flags Finals day takes place at Surrey Sports Park.

Last year’s runners up and 2024/25 SEMLA Premier Division champions Spencer will take on fellow Premier Division side Camden Capybaras in the Senior Final.

The Intermediate Final will see Division 1 title winners Walcoutians play second-placed Bristol Bombers while Division 2 champions Camden Capybaras 2s and Midlands League runners-up Leicester City go head-to-head in the Minor Final.

The Flags Finals day is the culmination of the SEMLA season that started back in October and comes after two weeks of round robin and semi-final matches across the three Flags competitions.

After making it through the round robin group, Spencer and Camden secured their place in the Senior Final after respective 20-6 and 13-8 semi-final victories over Hillcroft and Hampstead.

It was a particularly impressive semi-final win for Camden Capybaras who defeated last year’s champions and Premier Division winners in seven of the last 10 seasons Hampstead.

It’s sure to be an exciting final between the two teams who are stacked with international players, including England’s Nick DeCaprio, Ben Buchanan, Lyndon Bunio, Dan Watson, Albert Whitehead, Tom Roche, Will Prescott, Hal Dwobeng, and Ed Hilditch.

Spencer take a slight advantage into the final having defeated Camden Capybaras in their two Premier Division matches this season (Spencer 17-3 Camden Capybaras & Camden Capybaras 5-18 Spencer).

Walcoutians and Bristol Bombers reached the Intermediate Final after also making it through the round robin group and then defeating Nuneaton and Reading 18-11 and 15-6 respectively.

Walcoutians ended Spencer 2s domination of Division 1 this year by winning the title after Spencer 2s joined their first team in the Premier Division for 2024/25.

Hot on their heels, however, were Bristol Bombers who finished in second place, just five points behind the league leaders.

Results in the league this year lend themselves to a Walcoutians victory in the Intermediate Final (Bristol Bombers 7-13 Walcoutians & Walcoutians 14-7 Bristol Bombers) but anything can happen on Flags Finals day.

In two tight Minor Flags semi-finals, Camden Capybaras 2s overcame Oxford City by a single goal to reach the final 10-9 and Leicester City beat Exeter University 10-8.

Camden Capybaras 2s claimed the Division 2 title by a single point after eight wins, one draw, and one loss in their 10 games this season.

Leicester City finished fourth in the Midlands League before eventually falling to Nuneaton in the Final Four competition but head into the Minor Final with confidence after defeating 2023 Minor Flags winners and 2024 finalists Exeter University in their semi-final match-up.

As in previous years, entry for spectators is free with donations accepted throughout the day to help offset the cost of running the event.

Each game will be played on the AGP1 (3G) pitch at Surrey Sports Park with parking available on-site; food and drink will be available from the main building.

All three finals will be streamed live on YouTube by Lacrosse Live UK HERE.

England Lacrosse to support WADA's annual Play True Day

England women's squad huddled with sticks in air

England Lacrosse is delighted to be supporting the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Play True Day on Friday 11 April.

Play True Day aims to promote clean sport with the campaign highlighting key themes that reflect the values of integrity, fairness, and unity.

This year’s theme is “It starts with you” as WADA looks to shift the focus from the collective ‘we’ to the individual ‘you’ and emphasise that, although we’re all part of a united team, each of us has a vital role to play in championing clean sport.

Since its inception in 2014, Play True Day has gained momentum through the efforts of WADA’s global anti-doping partners; from inspiring posts to impactful campaigns, their contributions have played a vital role in spreading the message of clean sport worldwide.

The first official celebration took place in 2014, aiming to unite the global sporting community under a shared commitment to integrity and fairness. Since that first celebration in 2014, Play True Day has evolved from a small initiative into a global movement that reaches millions each year.

In 2024, on its 10th anniversary, over 100 countries and 50 organisations participated, creating a global wave of support for clean sport generating nearly 200 million impressions and 260,000 engagements worldwide on social media.

Nuneaton named SEMLA Midlands League champions

Nuneaton Men's team squad photo

Nuneaton Lacrosse Club picked up back-to-back South of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (SEMLA) Midlands League titles for the first time last month after a final day 11-7 win over Leicester City.

After finishing top of the regular league table, Nuneaton qualified for the Midlands Final 4 competition along with City of Stoke (2nd), Leicester City (3rd), and Loughborough Lions (4th) where an 11-2 semi-final win over Loughborough was followed by the final victory over Leicester to secure the overall title.

The result saw them remain unbeaten throughout the 2024/25 season, winning all 10 of their fixtures including an impressive 8-2 win over second placed City of Stoke in October.

It was that win that helped Nuneaton secure the title as they finished two points above Stoke, scoring 89 goals and somehow conceding just 16 (less than two goals per game!).

Finishing as the Midlands League leaders saw Nuneaton go into the Intermediate Flags Finals group stage where they finished top of Group C ahead of Spencer 3 and Cheltenham on goal difference before falling to an 18-11 defeat against Walcoutians in the semi-final.

The title means Nuneaton have secured back-to-back SEMLA Midlands league trophies for the first time after winning the league trophy last year.

Their first title was during the ill-fated 2019/20 season that was cut short due to the pandemic after which first placed Nuneaton were declared champions due to their superior head-to-head record against second placed Loughborough University.

That season saw just six teams enter the SEMLA Midlands League which has since grown to 11 teams this season, highlighting the incredible work of teams, players, and volunteers in the Midlands to grow lacrosse within that area.

Spencer lift fifth SEMLA Premier Division title

Spencer players huddles before a game

Spencer lifted their fifth South of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (SEMLA) Premier Division title and their first since 2022 last month after a final day victory over Spencer 2s.

The 14-2 win over Spencer 2s saw Spencer go unbeaten in the 2024/25 season, winning each of their 10 games, scoring 165 and conceding just 49.

Spencer’s team is stacked with some of the best lacrosse talent the country has to offer with England’s Hal Dwobeng, Tom Bracegirdle, Ben Buchanan, Dan Watson, Albert Whitehead, and Tom Roche all part of their squad.

They’ve now got the opportunity to score a double of trophies when they take on Camden Capybaras in the SEMLA Senior Flags Final this weekend.

Champions for the past two seasons, Hampstead, finished third behind Spencer and Hillcroft after a below par season saw them win just four of their Premier Division matches and finish 11 points behind the league leaders.

Hitchin finished bottom of the league with 25 points after two wins from 10 games, just a point behind Camden Capybaras who cling onto their top division status for another year at least.

Elsewhere in the SEMLA leagues, Walcoutians secured an immediate return to the Premier Division after relegation last season and went unbeaten in Division 1, winning all 10 games; they’ll take on Bristol Bombers on Saturday in the Intermediate Flags Final.

Camden Capybaras 2s came out on top in an incredibly tight Division 2 where just two points separated first from third while Oxford City secured the Division 3 title, finishing a point above second placed Spencer 4s and winning all nine of their matches this season.

Camden Capybaras 2s will compete for the Minor Flags trophy as they play Leicester City in the final on Saturday.

In the SEMLA Local Leagues, Spencer (South East 1), Walcoutians (South East 2), Richcroft (South East 3), and Cardiff Harlequins (South West) all secured top spot in their respective leagues.

Poynton presented with NEMLA Premier Division trophy

Poynton squad photo with 2024/25 trophy

Poynton, based in Cheshire, were presented with the 2024/25 North of England Men’s Lacrosse Association (NEMLA) Premier Division trophy after an enthralling 15-11 win over Stockport on Saturday.

Having officially secured the title at the end of February, Poynton were presented with the trophy having lost just once all season, scoring 200 times while conceding just 95.

Even if Cheadle and Brooklands, who sit in second and third place respectively, were to win their final games, Poynton will finish at least nine points clear at the top of the table which could be as many as 11 points should those teams taste defeat on the final day.

It’s been an incredible season for Poynton who last lost a league match in February against Brooklands and claim their first NEMLA Premier Division title since 2018.

In that year, they also claimed the European Club Championship and the Men’s Senior Flags titles and they have the opportunity to secure a double this season when they take on Brooklands in the Senior Flags Final at Rochdale Lacrosse Club on Sunday 27 April.

Poynton have an enviable amount of talent in their ranks including England’s William Baxter and Alex Russell and are led by England coach Mike Bartlett; they’ve now got just over three weeks to prepare for that Senior Flags Final showdown with Brooklands.

In the other NEMLA leagues, Rochdale have been promoted to the Premier Division after winning the Championship title with a game still to play having gone unbeaten throughout the season, Brooklands A are Division 1 champions with just one defeat, and Brooklands ExA secured the Division 2 title finishing two points ahead of Mellor B in second.

The Women’s Division is still to be decided with Stockport currently sitting top of the league with one game left to play but Oxton hot on their heels with two games remaining.

Watch Poynton’s match against Stockport from Saturday below.

Surrey secure first Southern Development Tournament title

The University of Surrey secured the first ever Southern Universities Development Tournament title after a 3-1 final win over the Bath University on Saturday.

Canterbury Christ Church and Cardiff universities also took part in the four-team tournament that aimed to develop younger or less experienced players and build connections between the universities heading into the future.

During the tournament, each team was able to play at least four 30-minute games in a round robin format with over 50 players taking part throughout the day; there were also plenty of supporters cheering the teams on from the sidelines.

A handful of the Bath University women’s players even kitted up and got involved, with Louisa Jones playing every single minute as a long pole for Bath.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) was Bath University’s first-year goalie Harrison Lane who stepped in the cage for Surrey who didn’t have a goal-keeper on the day.

Bath’s University Lacrosse Officer (ULO) Toby West and the other organisers of the tournament would like to thank the teams and players for attending and making the day such a brilliant one.

Huge thanks go to the four volunteer officials, Izzy Sankey, Max Woodhouse, Roben Els, and Harry Goodrem, who helped to make the day run as smoothly as possible.

The England Lacrosse ULO Programme has been in existence since 2018 and aims to further support and develop the lacrosse population at university, link with local clubs and residents near the university, and support players’ transition from education to employment, so individuals continue to be part of the lacrosse community after education.

The Stadium in Exposition Park will be the lacrosse venue for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, World Lacrosse has announced.

As well as showcasing lacrosse at an Olympic Games for the first time in 80 years, The Stadium will also host flag football during LA28 with the pitch being configured according to the smaller field of play used for both disciplines.

Situated in the heart of Los Angeles, The Stadium in Exposition Park has a capacity of 22,000 and is home to Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC who play in the MLS and NWSL respectively.

Despite only opening seven years ago in 2018, The Stadium has already experienced high-level lacrosse when it hosted the inaugural, and so far only, Premier League Lacrosse All-Star Game in July 2019.

Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, The Killers, and Blackpink have all performed sell-out concerts at The Stadium that is adjacent to the LA Memorial Coliseum and within walking distance of other key LA28 venues.

NTU claim historic three-peat after derby win on BUCS Big Wednesday

Nottingham Trent University men's squad photo after winning the BUCS Championship trophy

Nottingham Trent University completed an historic three-peat as they secured the 2025 National Championship trophy with a 12-9 win over city rivals the University of Nottingham on BUCS Big Wednesday yesterday.

Eight separate goal-scorers, including a hat-trick from Jason Thomforde, helped Trent over the line in what should have been a comfortable win that became more than a little tense in the fourth quarter.

Four goals from Ben Jackson and three from Collin Stewart brought Nottingham to within three goals of Trent and salvaged some pride in a game where they were 10-2 down at the end of the third.

A tense back and forth first quarter ended with the teams just a single goal apart after Justin White hammered home with two minutes until quarter-time.

But a more simple second quarter from a Trent point of view saw them heading into the third in the ascendency and with a four goal lead after Blair Pachereva, Drew Wilkinson, and Thomforde scored.

Trent took that momentum and confidence into the penultimate quarter and, despite Nottingham showing some promise, took a 10-2 lead going into the final 15 minutes.

A game which looked easily won by Trent was thrown into disarray in the fourth as Nottingham, with nothing to lose, came out quickly and reduced the deficit to just three goals after a hat-trick from Stewart, two from Jamie Mochan, and a fourth from Ben Jackson.

With a couple of minutes to go in the game, Trent picked up the ball and saw the game out to win a third National Championship title in a row but Nottingham will be left wondering what might have been had there been an extra few minutes to play.

Watch the match in full HERE.

University of Nottingham 9-12 Nottingham Trent University (0-1, 0-3, 3-7, 6-1)

Nottingham scorers | Ben Jackson (3G), Collin Stewart (3G), Jamie Mochan (2G), Ben Jackson (1G).

Nottingham Trent scorers | Jason Thomforde (3G), Chase Lilly (2G), Justin White (2G), Ellis Baythorpe (1G), Will Locker (1G), Blair Pachreva (1G), Drew Wilkinson (1G), Nathan Wilkinson (1G).

UoN demolish Exeter to reclaim Championship title on BUCS Big Wednesday

University of Nottingham women's squad photo after becoming BUCS National Champions

The University of Nottingham demolished Exeter University 12-3 in the 2025 Women’s National Championship final at Loughborough University on BUCS Big Wednesday yesterday.

England’s Emma Savage scored four with England U20 Euros-winning captain Rachael Ball hitting a hat-trick as the University of Nottingham reclaimed the title they lost to Durham last year.

The victory means Nottingham, led by England U20 men’s Head Coach Mike Armstrong, has now won three of the last four National Championship finals, securing themselves as the UK’s dominant force in women’s university lacrosse.

Nottingham started hard and fast and never looked back, securing a four-goal lead through Carys Johnson, Savage, and two from Ball, with just one quarter gone.

Another big quarter from Nottingham in the second left Exeter with a mountain to climb as the midlands club sailed into a 7-0 lead after strikes from Riley McGettigan and a brace from Charlie Bell.

An Exeter side led by England women’s Head Coach Mike Molster was never going to completely give up and a stronger third quarter saw them score their first goal of the match through Sofia Wise.

But it was the defensive side of the game that continued to let Exeter down and they shipped another three goals courtesy of Johnson and two more from Savage before the whistle blew for quarter-time.

A more even final quarter allowed for an exciting last 15 minutes with two goals for both sides but the damage had already been done and Nottingham secured the 2025 National Championship trophy.

BUCS Big Wednesday returns to Loughborough University tomorrow with four games of lacrosse across the men’s and women’s competitions in the battle to be crowned National Championship and Trophy winners for 2025.

The University of Nottingham are back in the Women’s Championship final looking to win a third title in four years after a narrow defeat to Durham last year saw them miss out on an historic three-peat under the tutelage of Head Coach Mike Armstrong.

With Exeter returning to BUCS Big Wednesday after a year away, it’s a repeat of the 2023 Championship final as Mike Molster’s side look to upset the odds and claim a first title in their history.

They had a dramatic journey to Wednesday’s final with an incredible 7-6 comeback win over last year’s finalists Durham.

Having been 6-2 down at the half, it was looking bleak for an Exeter side full to the brim with international talent but they rallied in miraculous fashion to take the win right at the death.

UoN’s semi-final saw a fairly routine 10-5 win over BUCS Big Wednesday hosts Loughborough and, with just one defeat between the two finalists all season (an 8-7 UoN loss to Durham in November), we’re surely in for a classic goal-filled match.

With no fewer than 16 players between the two sides in the England Performance and Development squads, including England U20 captains Ana Green and Rachael Ball (both UoN), the 2025 Women’s Championship final will be one for the ages.

The Women’s Championship final gets underway at 4:30pm.

Over in the Men’s Championship, we have a repeat of the past two finals between two of the best university sides in the English game.

Nottingham Trent will be looking to claim a third title in as many years against the University of Nottingham, and it’s a familiar story for both teams with NTU having already secured the BUCS Premier North crown with a six-point gap over UoN.

As with the women’s teams, both men’s rosters are stacked with experience, highlighting the strength of the game in England at the moment.

NTU Head Coach Sam Patterson has a four-strong leadership group that includes Blair Pachereva and Justin White, who have both featured in the NCAA for Brock Badgers and Rollins College respectively, as well as young England stars Nathan Wilkinson and Will Locker, who both helped England U20s to a silver medal at last year’s U20 Euros.

Across the city, UoN have a sturdy spine of England U20 players running through the team including captains Joachim Ruby and Billy Styche.

Noah Arnison, Jack Dearden, Xander Stewart, James Thompson, and Jamie Mochan also feature as part of the England U20 contingent, alongside Jamaican international Tony Diallo as UoN search for an historic first Championship title.

This season’s results all point to an NTU victory with the team going into the final unbeaten in 24/25 and claiming wins in both fixtures against UoN (14-5 & 11-3) but anything can truly happen when these two rivals take to the field tomorrow night.

The Men’s Championship final gets underway at 7:15pm.

The opening match on BUCS Big Wednesday is the Women’s Trophy final as Exeter 2s take on Durham 2s in a repeat of last year’s showdown.

In that game, Exeter 2s came out with the narrow 13-10 win and they’ll be hoping to do the same again in 2025 after an unbeaten season saw them claim the Premier South 2 title by a huge 12 points.

Despite just one defeat this season (an opening day 9-5 loss to Liverpool), Durham 2s finished second in the Premier North 2 division behind Liverpool but will head into Wednesday’s Trophy final with confidence after nine league wins in a row.

The opening Women’s match up will be followed by the Men’s Trophy final between Imperial College and Manchester Metropolitan.

Both brand new teams to the Trophy final for this year, Imperial and Man Met completed unbeaten seasons to win their respective league titles.

Imperial come into this match with a big 11-2 semi-final win over Bournemouth 2s while Man Met, led this season by former England men’s box lacrosse team Assistant Coach Andy Downing, defeated Northumbria 9-2 to claim their spot in the end of season showpiece.
