Surrey secure first Southern Development Tournament title

The University of Surrey secured the first ever Southern Universities Development Tournament title after a 3-1 final win over the Bath University on Saturday.

Canterbury Christ Church and Cardiff universities also took part in the four-team tournament that aimed to develop younger or less experienced players and build connections between the universities heading into the future.

During the tournament, each team was able to play at least four 30-minute games in a round robin format with over 50 players taking part throughout the day; there were also plenty of supporters cheering the teams on from the sidelines.

A handful of the Bath University women’s players even kitted up and got involved, with Louisa Jones playing every single minute as a long pole for Bath.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) was Bath University’s first-year goalie Harrison Lane who stepped in the cage for Surrey who didn’t have a goal-keeper on the day.

Bath’s University Lacrosse Officer (ULO) Toby West and the other organisers of the tournament would like to thank the teams and players for attending and making the day such a brilliant one.

Huge thanks go to the four volunteer officials, Izzy Sankey, Max Woodhouse, Roben Els, and Harry Goodrem, who helped to make the day run as smoothly as possible.

The England Lacrosse ULO Programme has been in existence since 2018 and aims to further support and develop the lacrosse population at university, link with local clubs and residents near the university, and support players’ transition from education to employment, so individuals continue to be part of the lacrosse community after education.

Bath University to host first Southern Development Tournament

Bath University is set to host the first ever Southern Universities Development Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday 29 March with Bath, Surrey, Canterbury Christ Church, and Cardiff Universities all taking part.

With over 50 players from the four universities participating, the Southern Universities Development Tournament will have a round robin structure with a champion being crowned at the end of the day.

All four university teams have had strong seasons in the BUCS leagues with Bath being crowned Southern Premier champions but the ultimate aim of the tournament is to develop younger or less experienced players and to build connections between the universities heading into the future.

Taking place at the Medical Pitch at Bath University from 10am, the tournament is the brainchild of Bath’s University Lacrosse Officer (ULO) Toby West and is set to be a fun-filled day of lacrosse.

FINAL | Women’s Championship | University of Nottingham 12-3 Exeter | 4:30pm
FINAL | Men’s Championship | Nottingham Trent 12-9 University of Nottingham | 7:15pm

BUCS Big Wednesday returns to Loughborough University tomorrow with four games of lacrosse across the men’s and women’s competitions in the battle to be crowned National Championship and Trophy winners for 2025.

The University of Nottingham are back in the Women’s Championship final looking to win a third title in four years after a narrow defeat to Durham last year saw them miss out on an historic three-peat under the tutelage of Head Coach Mike Armstrong.

With Exeter returning to BUCS Big Wednesday after a year away, it’s a repeat of the 2023 Championship final as Mike Molster’s side look to upset the odds and claim a first title in their history.

They had a dramatic journey to Wednesday’s final with an incredible 7-6 comeback win over last year’s finalists Durham.

Having been 6-2 down at the half, it was looking bleak for an Exeter side full to the brim with international talent but they rallied in miraculous fashion to take the win right at the death.

UoN’s semi-final saw a fairly routine 10-5 win over BUCS Big Wednesday hosts Loughborough and, with just one defeat between the two finalists all season (an 8-7 UoN loss to Durham in November), we’re surely in for a classic goal-filled match.

With no fewer than 16 players between the two sides in the England Performance and Development squads, including England U20 captains Ana Green and Rachael Ball (both UoN), the 2025 Women’s Championship final will be one for the ages.

The Women’s Championship final gets underway at 4:30pm.

Over in the Men’s Championship, we have a repeat of the past two finals between two of the best university sides in the English game.

Nottingham Trent will be looking to claim a third title in as many years against the University of Nottingham, and it’s a familiar story for both teams with NTU having already secured the BUCS Premier North crown with a six-point gap over UoN.

As with the women’s teams, both men’s rosters are stacked with experience, highlighting the strength of the game in England at the moment.

NTU Head Coach Sam Patterson has a four-strong leadership group that includes Blair Pachereva and Justin White, who have both featured in the NCAA for Brock Badgers and Rollins College respectively, as well as young England stars Nathan Wilkinson and Will Locker, who both helped England U20s to a silver medal at last year’s U20 Euros.

Across the city, UoN have a sturdy spine of England U20 players running through the team including captains Joachim Ruby and Billy Styche.

Noah Arnison, Jack Dearden, Xander Stewart, James Thompson, and Jamie Mochan also feature as part of the England U20 contingent, alongside Jamaican international Tony Diallo as UoN search for an historic first Championship title.

This season’s results all point to an NTU victory with the team going into the final unbeaten in 24/25 and claiming wins in both fixtures against UoN (14-5 & 11-3) but anything can truly happen when these two rivals take to the field tomorrow night.

The Men’s Championship final gets underway at 7:15pm.

The opening match on BUCS Big Wednesday is the Women’s Trophy final as Exeter 2s take on Durham 2s in a repeat of last year’s showdown.

In that game, Exeter 2s came out with the narrow 13-10 win and they’ll be hoping to do the same again in 2025 after an unbeaten season saw them claim the Premier South 2 title by a huge 12 points.

Despite just one defeat this season (an opening day 9-5 loss to Liverpool), Durham 2s finished second in the Premier North 2 division behind Liverpool but will head into Wednesday’s Trophy final with confidence after nine league wins in a row.

The opening Women’s match up will be followed by the Men’s Trophy final between Imperial College and Manchester Metropolitan.

Both brand new teams to the Trophy final for this year, Imperial and Man Met completed unbeaten seasons to win their respective league titles.

Imperial come into this match with a big 11-2 semi-final win over Bournemouth 2s while Man Met, led this season by former England men’s box lacrosse team Assistant Coach Andy Downing, defeated Northumbria 9-2 to claim their spot in the end of season showpiece.

Bristol University to host annual charity match in memory of Matt Ward

The University of Bristol is set to host its annual men’s charity match in memory of former Bristol player Matt Ward against the University of Exeter in the BUCS Men’s Premier South league on Wednesday 30 October.

Each year since 2018, Bristol has marked its men’s first team’s home league match against Exeter by raising money for charity and, after Matt’s death in 2020, the match has been dedicated to him and the charity chosen in conjunction with his family.

This year’s chosen charity is the Charlie Waller Trust who work to educate young people, as well as those with a responsibility towards them, about mental health and wellbeing. The Trust seeks to empower young people to talk more openly about the subject of mental health and make sure they are better equipped to support themselves and those around them.

The charity match has always been an exciting affair with Bristol coming out on top in the last three events - 9-8 in 2021, 9-4 in 2022, and 15-4 in 2023.

Taking place at the University of Bristol’s Coombe Dingle Sports Centre astro-turf pitch, the charity match will face-off at 7:30pm and spectators are welcome to watch the match for a suggested donation of £3 (cash and card will be accepted on the day and donations of any amount will be accepted).

The University of Bristol Lacrosse Club has also set up its own Just Giving page, allowing people to donate as much as they want and from anywhere in the world with all proceeds going to the Charlie Waller Trust.

University of Leeds Men's Lacrosse Club nominated for national honour

The University of Leeds Men’s Lacrosse Club has been nominated for the Dan Porter Award at this year’s 2023/24 British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) awards.

The Dan Porter award celebrates an individual or group who have faced and overcome adversity or disadvantage to positively impact others within university sport and physical activity. That individual or group will also have demonstrated a remarkable sense of character to achieve, motivate, or inspire.

It’s been a hugely successful season for the University of Leeds Men’s Lacrosse Club after their first team won the BUCS Men’s Northern Tier 1 - 1A and a first ever National Trophy, remaining unbeaten throughout the season.

And the nominated for the Dan Porter Award is testament to everything they’ve been doing as a club over the last year, including raising money for several good causes, continuing to run two men’s teams, and generally being a force for good within the West Yorkshire area.

Lewis Evans from the University of Nottingham and Kagna Lozniceriu from the University of Derby are also nominated for the Dan Porter Award alongside Leeds.

Leeds will find out if they’ve won the award during the BUCS Conference 2024 which takes place at Warwick University from Tuesday 16 - Friday 19 July.

University Aspire team finish 4th at Lisboa Cup

The England Lacrosse University Aspire Programme squad finished fourth at the 2024 Lisboa Cup in Lisbon, Portugal over the weekend.

Taking part in the men’s competition, the 20-player squad secured two wins, two draws, and two defeats from their six round robin games on Saturday as they finished fourth in the final group table, setting up a third-place play-off with Czechia’s Brno Ravens.

A narrow 11-10 defeat to Brno Ravens in that third-place play-off saw the University Aspire team finish fourth as the first year of the University Aspire Programme comes to an end.

The England Lacrosse University Aspire Programme aims to identify athletes who started playing lacrosse at university or have developed their game at university to a point where they show the athletic potential to progress into the England Lacrosse Performance Programme.

The Programme will be expanded to include women for the first time in the 2024/25 season beginning in October with coach assessment days held regionally.

Successful players will then be invited to attend several squad training sessions throughout the year where they receive specialist coaching and personalised actions plans to help develop their technical and tactical skills.

Once the training sessions are completed, players are selected from the wider Programme for an annual tour, with squad players able to remain as part of the University Aspire Programme squad beyond graduation from university.
