Cirencester and Mellor swoop to victory at 2023 Bath 8s tournament

Cirencester and Mellor claimed victory in the respective women’s and men’s Bath 8s tournaments on Saturday at Bath Lacrosse Club.

Cirencester continued the incredible feat of no team winning the women’s title more than once since the competition was founded in 2017 as they defeated reigning champions, Wilmslow, 5-4 in sudden death overtime after the game had originally finished 4-4.

Earlier in the day, Cirencester had overcome a tough Guildford Gators side 5-4 in their semi-final match after finishing as the second seed following the group stage matches.

Wilmslow reached their second consecutive final by defeating the top seed after the group stages, St Mary’s, Calne, 2-1 in their semi-final.

In the men’s tournament, Mellor snatched their third Bath 8s title as they also overcame opposition from Wilmslow, eventually coming out 3-2 winners.

They eased past 2022 champions, Cheadle, 7-1 in their semi-final match before Wilmslow booked their spot in the final after a 3-1 win over Loughborough University Alumni.

A total of 50 teams took part in the 2023 Bath 8s across the men’s and women’s tournaments making it one of the biggest ever competitions to date.

Richmond Lacrosse Club looking for next generation of talent!

Richmond Lacrosse Club is looking for the next generation of talent as it gears up for the new 2023/24 lacrosse season.

The club is even adding under-14 boys and under-15 girls teams to its list of teams ahead of the new season that already includes under-8 boys & girls, under-10 boys & girls, under-12 boys, and under-13 girls teams.

Richmond’s priority is to “get as many youngsters playing lacrosse” and it is open and inclusive to every young person wanting to get involved in lacrosse whether they are a serious player with lots of experience or a complete beginner.

The club remains at its home ground at King’s House Sports Ground and every session takes place on a Sunday.

Every single new player attending a session at Richmond Lacrosse Club will be provided with all the equipment needed to take part in that session.

For all groups, the first session will take place on Sunday 10th September 2023 and run through to Sunday 31 March 2024.

England Lacrosse is excited to announce that National Lacrosse Day 2023 will be celebrated on Saturday 16 September 2023, and this year's theme is Safe Sport.

National Lacrosse Day is your opportunity to celebrate everything you love about the game and get the season going with a bang by coming together as one community to celebrate lacrosse.

From field, to box, to sixes, to mixed, to clubs, to schools, to universities, to just having a throw-about in the park with your friends, everyone is welcome within the sport and should be able to discover the reasons why we love lacrosse. 

Our aim this year with the theme of Safe Sport is to highlight the important steps we can all take to ensure our sport remains safe, welcoming and fun for everyone involved.

Whether you're a player, a coach, an official, a volunteer or a spectator, we all have a duty to support one another in all aspects of the game.

We are focusing on five specific areas on National Lacrosse Day this year:

1. Welfare Officers

- Who is/are your club’s Officers?
- Where can this information be found?
- How do people report a concern?

2. Concussion and Injury Awareness

- If in doubt, sit them out
- Report all injuries

3. Qualified and Registered Coaches

- Are your coaches fully qualified, registered with England Lacrosse, CPR trained, and DBS checked?

4. Qualified and Registered Officials

- Each official must be qualified for the level they are officiating and registered with England Lacrosse

5. England Lacrosse Values

- Does your club uphold the England Lacrosse Values of Inclusivity, Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence, Accountability, and Respect?

New opportunity to gain England Lacrosse Level 3 Umpire Award

England Lacrosse is delighted to announce a date for the latest Level 3 Umpire Course, giving umpires the opportunity to gain England Lacrosse’s highest umpiring award.

Taking place from 10am-4pm at Heathfield School, Ascot, on Saturday 21 October 2023, the course will allow umpires to build on the knowledge learned during their Levels 1 and 2 awards and eventually begin to officiate at Home Internationals and be selected for European competitive tournaments.

The Level 3 Umpire Course is open to all individuals currently holding a Level 2 Umpire qualification aged 18 and above, and who have held the Level 2 qualification for at least one playing season (i.e. before September 2022).

Costing just £110 for England Lacrosse members, there is unfortunately no sign up without an up to date England Lacrosse membership.

Registration for the Course is open until Friday 20 October 2023.

New dates set for 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships

The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships will now take place from 20-29 September 2024 in Utica, New York, USA after World Lacrosse revised the dates earlier this week.

Originally scheduled from 13-22 September 2024, the dates for the World Championships for men’s and women’s box lacrosse have been adjusted “to better align with the global lacrosse calendar”.

The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships will mark the sixth Championship for men and first for women in the discipline of box lacrosse, marking a historic first for men’s and women’s world titles to be decided at the same event.

Hosted by Mohawk Valley Garden and Oneida County with support from World Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse, the Championships will feature the top box lacrosse players in the world competing for their national teams.  

The Utica University Nexus Center will serve as the main tournament hub, featuring three playing surfaces within the state-of-the-art, 169,440-square-foot facility.

The Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium (known as the ‘Aud’) – a 3,956-seat multi-purpose arena and home of the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets – will also host a full slate of games.

England men will head into this tournament off the back of winning their first European Championship title in 2022 while the 2024 World Championships will mark the first competitive outing for England women.

World Lacrosse reveals logo for 2024 Women's U20 Championship

World Lacrosse has revealed its logo for the 2024 Women’s U20 Championship with less than a year to go until the competition begins.

Taking place in Hong Kong, China, from 15-25 August, the 2024 U20 Championship will be the first held in Asia and will see 10 of the world’s best teams battle it out to be the world’s number one.

The logo is inspired, in part, by the flag of Hong Kong with its five bauhinia petals and is incorporated inside the head of a lacrosse stick, similar to the World Lacrosse logo.

England will head out to Hong Kong next year looking to add to the European trophy they won in summer 2023 at the ELF Women’s U21 Championship and hoping to improve on their fourth place finish at the last iteration of this competition in 2019.

World Lacrosse had previously announced one of the venues for the 2024 Championship as the Mong Kok Stadium, which seats 6,500 spectators and serves as a regular venue for Hong Kong Premier League football matches.

The stadium will be the site of featured games at the Championship, including the opening game, semi-finals, and medal games, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Blues and Hampstead to face teams from across Europe in Ken Galluccio Cup

Reigning Ken Galluccio Cup champions Blues (women) will take on Bern Titans of Switzerland and Germany’s Hamburg Lacrosse in Group C of the competition after a live group stage draw last week.

In the men’s tournament, English representatives, Hampstead, will battle it out against Swtizerland’s Olsen Saints, Delft Barons of the Netherlands, and Italy’s Bologna Sharks in the men’s event.

Blues will be looking to lift the Cup for the second year in a row after a successful tournament last year that saw them defeat close rivals Edinburgh University 19-4 in the final to lift the trophy.

In the men’s competition, Hampstead will be hoping they can win the Ken Galluccio Cup for a second time after they claimed their first title in 2019, defeating Oslo 8-2 in the final.

The Ken Galluccio Cup is contested by the champions from several of Europe’s lacrosse leagues and has been running roughly on an annual basis since 2008.

Originally named the Champions Cup, the tournament was renamed the Ken Galluccio Cup as a tribute to its creator after his death in 2009 and it is the largest European lacrosse tournament with teams from over 15 countries taking part.

This year’s competition will take place in Barcelona, Spain for the second time from 8-10 September and you can follow updates of the tournament HERE.

North Team level up 2023 North v South series with win in game two

The North Team kept alive their hopes of a first ever North v South series win after beating the South Team 7-4 in Saturday’s second game in the 2023 series.

Elliot Leonard was the star man as he bagged a hat-trick for the North who also saw two goals for Nathan Edwards and a goal each for Dave Groves and Corey Carver.

The South Team, who were without their talisman from the first game in the series, Louis Alhage, were determined but came up just short managing four goals this time around through Dan Watson (2), Tom Roper, and Albert Whitehead.

The result leaves the series currently tied at 1-1 with a victory for both sides heading into the final and deciding game in the series on Saturday 29 October when the 2023 North v South series champion with be crowned.

In the development game, showcasing some of the best up and coming box lacrosse talent in the country, the North Team also overcame the South Team to level the series and set up a grand slam final game and a winner takes all scenario after a dramatic 4-3 win on penalties after the game finished 5-5 after four quarters.

Further highlighting the growth and strength of box lacrosse in this country at the moment, a dedicated women’s session was held after the North v South games as our women’s box lacrosse players continue their preparations ahead of the first ever women’s World Championship next year.

Annual Bath 8s tournament taking place this weekend

31 men’s and 24 women’s teams are set to take part in the annual Bath 8s tournament at Bath Lacrosse Club on Saturday.

The 37th edition of the men’s competition will feature previous winners including reigning champions, Cheadle, as well as Mellor, Sheffield, and Hillcroft.

The women’s tournament, entering its sixth edition, is yet to have a repeat winner with Stockport (2017), Bristol Bombers (2018), Bath University (2019), Godolphin School (2021), and Wilmslow (2022) all lifting the trophy since the competition’s inception.

First taking place in 1986 as a men’s only event, the Bath 8s competition is the traditional lacrosse season opener and welcomes teams from all over the country to Odd Downs Sports Field, the home of Bath Lacrosse Club.

Since that first tournament 37 years ago, the men’s Bath 8s trophy has spent most of its life in the north of England with 31 titles going to nine different clubs across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and Yorkshire.

The most successful club are the reigning champions Cheadle who have won the trophy six times; they’re followed closely by Timperley, Wilmslow, and Low Profilers/Sheffield who all have five titles to their name.

The 2023 tournament will be the biggest ever with games starting at 10am and, as usual, spectators are welcome at the event and there will be food and drink available as well as dedicated lacrosse stalls.

Nominations open for Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards that aims to highlight “women who have inspired, encouraged, kept people active, and introduced people to new sports”.

At the 2023 event, awards will be handed out across seven categories, including the Changemaker Award, The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, Citi Disability Sportswoman of the Year, Grassroots Sportswoman of the Year, Team of the Year, Young Sportswoman of the Year, and the Helen Rollason Award for Inspiration; a break down of all the awards can be found below.

Judging the awards this year will be an exceptional panel of some of the best athletes Great Britain has ever produced with Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill DBE, Ama Agbeze MBE, Lauren Steadman MBE, Rebecca Adlington OBE, Chrissie Wellington OBE, and Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE all providing their expertise.

The nomination process will close at midnight on 31 August 2023, after which a judging panel will draw up the shortlist which will be announced on 1 October 2023. The winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony evening in November.

England Lacrosse U18 Boys Academy remain unbeaten on Prague tour

The England Lacrosse U18 Boys Academy, featuring 26 of England’s brightest young talents, remained unbeaten on their summer tour of Prague, Czechia where they played four games against top quality opposition.

The boys, who spent six days in the Czech capital, defeated a host of opposition with different levels of experience, including SK Lacrosse Jizni Mesto, Germany U20, a Czechia development side, and LCC Radotin.

Other highlights for the squad included an internal team scrimmage, a walking tour of Prague, and a session with The Good Stick Co. who make quality lacrosse sticks in the European Union.

Despite being quite early on in their lacrosse careers, the England Lacrosse U18 Boys Academy boasts heaps of experience with Hugo Peel having featured for England at the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in June and Josh Clegg, Aaron Davy, George Shonfeld, and Drew Wilkinson playing at The Fly 2023.

England Lacrosse would like to congratulate the squad on their successful tour and look forward to seeing what the future holds for the players!

Second North v South Box Lacrosse game to take place this weekend

The North team will be looking to bounce back from an opening game defeat in the annual North v South box lacrosse series as they take on the South team at Macclesfield Rugby Club, Cheshire, in the second game of the series on Saturday.

The South team has the upper-hand going into Saturday’s second match after they won the opening encounter 7-6 despite the North team being ahead for most of the game.

But the North team has the chance to level the series and ensure there is still something to play for when the teams take each other on in the third and final game of the series on Saturday 29 October.

As with the first game of the series, there will be a North v South development game, giving those younger and newer players to the game a chance to hone their skills in a competitive fixture, before the senior players take centre stage for the main event.

There will also be a women’s box lacrosse clinic between 4pm & 6pm open to any and all women who want to get involved in the game.

Spectators are welcome to attend the two games completely free of charge and the games will be live streamed HERE for those who cannot attend in person.

England Lacrosse membership is now available to purchase or renew ahead of the upcoming 2023/24 lacrosse season starting in September.

If you were an England Lacrosse member for the 2022/23 season, your membership will expire at 23:59 on 31 August and in order to play, coach, or officiate during the upcoming 2023/24 season, you will need to renew before that date; if you have set your membership to renew automatically, then you are not required to do anything.

Player registration opens for B-Ox Fest 2023

Player registration for the 2023 Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) B-Ox Fest is now open with places once again available for both men and women players.

The annual celebration of all things box lacrosse will see a women’s box lacrosse training camp take place on Saturday 23 September before the usual B-Ox Fest tournament on Sunday 24 September, featuring men’s and women’s teams.

Last year’s event saw women’s players involved for the first time as they held a dedicated 90-minute women’s session that proved immensely popular highlighting the upward trajectory of the women’s game in England over the past couple of years.

The inclusion of women’s teams in the B-Ox Fest tournament for the first time comes just over a year before the first ever women’s world championship for box lacrosse due to take place in Utica, New York in September 2024.

The objective of the B-Ox Fest is, and always has been, to play as much box lacrosse as possible, introduce new players to the sport, enjoy the social side of lacrosse, and give the growing number of women box players competitive games.

27 England players announced as part of British Lacrosse men's training squad

27 England players have been named as part of British Lacrosse’s 30-player 2023/24 men’s training squad, including nine players who represented England at the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in San Diego in June.

The training squad has been chosen by Head Coach, Tom Wenham, alongside Assistant Coaches, Ravi K. Sitlani and Andy Downing as they begin to prepare for the Hong Kong Super Sixes Invitational (26 December 2023 - 1 January 2024).

The latest squad announcement comes after a hugely successful first cycle in 2021/2022 that saw a men’s and women’s team represent Britain at The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, USA for the first time.

In that competition, both the men’s and women’s British Lacrosse teams finished fourth after tight bronze medal matches against Japan and Australia respectively.

The 2023/24 British Lacrosse women’s training squad will be announced in due course once the final selection has been made.

England Lacrosse is seeking to appoint an England Women U20 Assistant Coach/es to directly assist the Head Coach to deliver the highest quality coaching and contribute to a performance environment for athletes that will represent England on a European and World sporting stage.

The ideal candidate will have:

· A minimum of three years’ relevant coaching experience working with high potential/performance athletes.
· Experience of working with athletes aged U18-23.
· Experience in the development of individuals including auditing of strengths and weaknesses, producing personal development plans.
· Experience of monitoring performance and producing feedback and reports.

The successful applicant/s will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of plans for the U20 programme and tasked with assisting the Head Coach in developing a culture which challenges players to operate daily at the highest standards required to achieve sustained development.

Please note, this is a voluntary role with reasonable and necessary expenses provided.

Successful applicants will need to have availability to commence delivery at a camp planned for 26/27/28 October.

Vacancy | Women's Performance Transitions Assistant Coach

England Lacrosse is seeking to appoint several Women’s Performance Transitions Assistant Coaches to directly assist the Head Coach in Talent ID and delivery of the highest quality coaching, contributing to an enhanced development environment for athletes with the potential to represent England on a European and World sporting stage.

The ideal candidate will have:

· A minimum of three years’ relevant coaching experience working with high potential/performance athletes.
· Experience of working with athletes aged U18-23.
· Experience in the development of individuals including auditing of strengths and weaknesses, producing personal development plans.
· Experience of monitoring performance and producing feedback and reports.

The successful applicant(s) will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of plans for the ‘Performance Transition’ programme and tasked with assisting the Head Coach in developing a culture which challenges players to operate at the highest standards and inspires them to pursue their ambitions of representing England Lacrosse at international competition in the future.

Nominations open for Sporting Equals Awards 2023

Nominations are now open for the Sporting Equals Awards 2023 that aims to “recognise the hard work and dedication of ethnically diverse players, coaches, and organisations within the sports sector”.

Sporting Equals is accepting nominations for a number of categories including England Athletics Coach of the Year, British Army Community Champion of the Year, Community Sports Project of the Year, UK Sport Rising Star of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, and Youth Sport Trust Young Sportsperson of the Year.

The Awards will take place on 21 October 2023, during Black History Month, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, and will be hosted by comedian and TV personality, Judi Love.

Sporting Equals is an organisation that exists to promote ethnic diversity across sport and physical activity, and is the only organisation in the UK to do so.

Originally set up in 1998 by Sport England, in partnership with the Commission for Racial Equality, Sporting Equals is now a fully independent body and a national partner of Sport England.

Applications open for SBL Winter Box League 2023 Team Coaches & Managers

Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) has announced that applications are now open for the position of Team Coaches and Team Managers at the 2023 Winter Box League.

In addition to four existing men’s teams, the second season of the Winter Box League sees the introduction of two women’s teams, taking the total number of teams to six.

Successful applicants must have valid England Lacrosse membership, be over the age of 18 at the time of application, and not be currently serving any form of suspension issued by a regional association and/or England Lacrosse. Applicants for the role of Team Coaches must additionally have a valid coaching qualification of at least Coaching Field Lacrosse (Level 2).

Team Coaches will be responsible for selecting players during the draft process, coaching their allocated team for the duration of the Winter Box League, and setting the standard for commitment, professionalism and integrity expected by their team. Team Coaches are expected to be available on each game day.

Team Managers will support the Team Coaches, be the primary contact with the league management team, be the primary contact point with their squad, ensure the Winter Box League and their team are promoted in a professional manner via social media, and be responsible for team equipment, such as playing jerseys. Although preferable, the Team Manager does not need to attend each game day.

This year, the Winter Box League has the ambition to appoint a paid coaching mentor(s), who would be available to any of the Team Coaches in an advisory capacity. This is to encourage applications from coaches experienced in other formats of lacrosse, such as field or sixes, who want to learn the box game.

The league game days are:

•  Sunday 10 December 2023

•  Sunday 17 December 2023

•  Sunday 7 January 2024

•  Sunday 14 January 2024

All games will be run out of the Oxford Academy 3G Dome, OX4 6JZ. 

Each Team Coach and Team Manager will receive a £40 match fee, per game day attended, and may claim up to £25 in travel at 40p per mile.
