World Lacrosse reveals logo for 2024 Women's U20 Championship

World Lacrosse has revealed its logo for the 2024 Women’s U20 Championship with less than a year to go until the competition begins.

Taking place in Hong Kong, China, from 15-25 August, the 2024 U20 Championship will be the first held in Asia and will see 10 of the world’s best teams battle it out to be the world’s number one.

The logo is inspired, in part, by the flag of Hong Kong with its five bauhinia petals and is incorporated inside the head of a lacrosse stick, similar to the World Lacrosse logo.

England will head out to Hong Kong next year looking to add to the European trophy they won in summer 2023 at the ELF Women’s U21 Championship and hoping to improve on their fourth place finish at the last iteration of this competition in 2019.

World Lacrosse had previously announced one of the venues for the 2024 Championship as the Mong Kok Stadium, which seats 6,500 spectators and serves as a regular venue for Hong Kong Premier League football matches.

The stadium will be the site of featured games at the Championship, including the opening game, semi-finals, and medal games, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Spectators can subscribe to receive exclusive ticketing information about the Championship HERE while prospective volunteers can indicate their interest HERE.

Annual Bath 8s tournament taking place this weekend

31 men’s and 24 women’s teams are set to take part in the annual Bath 8s tournament at Bath Lacrosse Club on Saturday.

The 37th edition of the men’s competition will feature previous winners including reigning champions, Cheadle, as well as Mellor, Sheffield, and Hillcroft.

The women’s tournament, entering its sixth edition, is yet to have a repeat winner with Stockport (2017), Bristol Bombers (2018), Bath University (2019), Godolphin School (2021), and Wilmslow (2022) all lifting the trophy since the competition’s inception.

First taking place in 1986 as a men’s only event, the Bath 8s competition is the traditional lacrosse season opener and welcomes teams from all over the country to Odd Downs Sports Field, the home of Bath Lacrosse Club.

Since that first tournament 37 years ago, the men’s Bath 8s trophy has spent most of its life in the north of England with 31 titles going to nine different clubs across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and Yorkshire.

The most successful club are the reigning champions Cheadle who have won the trophy six times; they’re followed closely by Timperley, Wilmslow, and Low Profilers/Sheffield who all have five titles to their name.

The 2023 tournament will be the biggest ever with games starting at 10am and, as usual, spectators are welcome at the event and there will be food and drink available as well as dedicated lacrosse stalls.

England Lacrosse U18 Boys Academy on their tour to Prague, Czechia

The England Lacrosse U18 Boys Academy, featuring 26 of England’s brightest young talents, remained unbeaten on their summer tour of Prague, Czechia where they played four games against top quality opposition.

Second North v South Box Lacrosse game to take place this weekend

The North team will be looking to bounce back from an opening game defeat in the annual North v South box lacrosse series as they take on the South team at Macclesfield Rugby Club, Cheshire, in the second game of the series on Saturday.

The South team has the upper-hand going into Saturday’s second match after they won the opening encounter 7-6 despite the North team being ahead for most of the game.

But the North team has the chance to level the series and ensure there is still something to play for when the teams take each other on in the third and final game of the series on Saturday 29 October.

As with the first game of the series, there will be a North v South development game, giving those younger and newer players to the game a chance to hone their skills in a competitive fixture, before the senior players take centre stage for the main event.

There will also be a women’s box lacrosse clinic between 4pm & 6pm open to any and all women who want to get involved in the game.

Spectators are welcome to attend the two games completely free of charge and the games will be live streamed HERE for those who cannot attend in person.

Player registration for the 2023 Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) B-Ox Fest is now open with places once again available for both men and women players.

The annual celebration of all things box lacrosse will see a women’s box lacrosse training camp take place on Saturday 23 September before the usual B-Ox Fest tournament on Sunday 24 September, featuring men’s and women’s teams.

Last year’s event saw women’s players involved for the first time as they held a dedicated 90-minute women’s session that proved immensely popular highlighting the upward trajectory of the women’s game in England over the past couple of years.

The inclusion of women’s teams in the B-Ox Fest tournament for the first time comes just over a year before the first ever women’s world championship for box lacrosse due to take place in Utica, New York in September 2024.

The objective of the B-Ox Fest is, and always has been, to play as much box lacrosse as possible, introduce new players to the sport, enjoy the social side of lacrosse, and give the growing number of women box players competitive games.

South team wins first game of 2023 North v South box lacrosse series

The South team after their opening day win over the North team

The South team claimed victory over their rivals from the North in the first game of the 2023 North v South box lacrosse series with a 7-6 win at Macclesfield Rugby Club, Cheshire, on Saturday.

Louis Alhage scored four, including the eventual winner within the final two minutes of the match, in a standout performance for the South team.

Iain Murray, Jamie Powell, and Albert Whitehead also got their names on the scoresheet as the South team started the 2023 series the way they finished the 2022 edition, with a win.

The North team were unfortunate, however, having never been behind in the game until the South’s seventh goal and the ever dependable Matt Marsh and Luke Mills-Doig, who both scored a brace, ensured their team pushed the South all the way.

And, the North even had chances to draw level late on with Elliot Leonard being denied by Eliot Pugh’s shoulder before Will Allsop shot just wide.

But it was the South’s day and they take a 1-0 lead into the second game of the series at the same venue on 26 August.

A development game was also played prior to the main event, showcasing some of the best up and coming box lacrosse talent in the country.

In that game, the South team also took the win running out 11-3 victors with a hat-trick for Russell Farrer and two goals for Ben King.

The games were followed by a bumper two-hour women’s box lacrosse session led by England Assistant Coach, Andy Downing, as the women’s game continues to prepare for the first ever Women’s Box Lacrosse World Championship in September next year.

Wendy Reynolds appointed as Chair of Umpiring Advisory Group

England Lacrosse is delighted to announce that experienced official Wendy Reynolds has been appointed as the new Chair of the Umpiring Advisory Group (UAG).

Reynolds brings more than 35 years of lacrosse experience, 20 years of that as an umpire, to the role and succeeds Paul Bibby who left the role last year.

Assistant Head at Heathfield School, Ascot, Reynolds began playing lacrosse in 1987 as a goal-keeper and represented England for 14 years picking up a World Cup silver medal (1993) and bronze medal (1997) in the process.

After retiring from playing, Reynolds had a desire to remain involved in lacrosse at a high level and eventually moved into umpiring, representing England once again at every U19 and senior World Championship between 2003 and 2013 and being a part of the umpiring teams in two gold medal games.

Since 2014, Reynolds has been a member of the World Lacrosse Officiating Committee and a World Championship Lead Mentor/Assessor and in 2017, she was awarded the World Lacrosse Emeritus Award for Women’s Officiating.

Upon her appointment, Reynolds said:

“I have already chaired this committee under a different title, from around 2006–2009 and then had to take more of a back seat due to work commitments. I was still involved assessing at events but now want to get more involved again and help the next stage of officiating development.”

The UAG, working under the guidance of the Officiating Advisory Group and National Lacrosse Committee, is responsible for leading on the strategy for the future of umpiring in England.

The Group provides guidance and expertise on the application of rules for the domestic game, works with regions to promote umpiring across the country, and acts as a point of contact for any relevant umpiring issues.

Ian Ashworth appointed as Chair of Refereeing Advisory Group

England Lacrosse is delighted to announce experienced official Ian Ashworth has been appointed as the new Chair of the Refereeing Advisory Group (RAG).

After originally playing lacrosse at school before losing contact with the game, Ashworth first qualified as a Level 1 referee when his youngest son was 10 and his Boardman and Eccles team needed assistance with officials for junior games.

From there, Ashworth progressed to senior lacrosse as a club official before moving onto higher officiating qualifications and Chairing the North of England Officials’ Association.

Having been an official for almost 23 years now, Ashworth has represented England at both European and World Championships and has been an Officials’ Coach at three World Championships including at the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in San Diego.

The University of Nottingham celebrate victory at the 2022 BUCS 6s competition

Registration has opened for the annual BUCS 6s tournament taking place on Sunday 15 October 2023 at Nottingham Trent University.

Universities have until 11:59pm on Tuesday 19 September to register their teams with players able to join teams until 11:59pm on Tuesday 10 October.

The BUCS 6s competition has been a staple of the university lacrosse calendar for a number of years now and was held at the Coombe Dingle Sports Complex in Bristol between 2017 and 2021 when it moved to Nottingham Trent University.

In 2022, the University of Nottingham won both the men’s and women’s Championship titles while Cardiff University and Newcastle University took home the men’s and women’s Trophy titles respectively.

Traditionally an eight-a-side tournament, the format was changed in 2021 to fit in with the new sixes version of lacrosse.

Registered teams will be split into two competitions, the Championship and the Trophy, and seeded based on their position in the BUCS Lacrosse 2022-23 season.

Premiership universities’ first teams will be allocated to the Championship with any remaining spaces allocated to the next best finishing position; the remaining teams will be allocated to the Trophy along with any second or third teams.
