England came through a tough encounter with the Netherlands to eventually win 14-6 and finish top of Pool A, securing their Quarter Final spot for Wednesday.

Netherlands came out pumped up and determined to build on their 17-1 win against Belgium the previous day, while England entered the fixture off the back of a team rest day.

Their goalscoring streak from the Belgium game continued as the Dutch went 0-1 up, and it took England until the 7th minute to get on the board as Hannah Thurston got her first senior England goal following a laser feed from Sofia Wise.

Sofia was the architect again for the second, feeding Liv Wimpenny, while namesake Julie Wise then scored just before the 1/4 time to give England a good lead.

However, it was by no means enough to see off Netherlands yet and after a series of foul calls, two free positions drew Netherlands level.

But as England did in their previous game against Italy, a strong run in Q2 pulled them back in front. Jordan Carr, Georgie Southorn and Milly Home, England’s three leading point scorers pushed England three ahead before the Dutch made it 6-4 at the half.

The teams then traded goals early on after the break, England’s through Claire Faram, before England then made a run for home, utilising the strong strength in depth and stamina of the roster to eventually break Netherlands and put together a 7-goal streak.

Carr, Home, Southorn all featuring again while Minty Loxton-Barnard scored a strong solo effort along with Shires and Sofia Wise netting.

Netherlands did pick the last score but it was a convincing victory in the end as England head into the Quarter Finals with all eyes now on advancing on the way to retaining the title.
