Double delight as University of Nottingham dominate at BUCS Sixes Championships

The University of Nottingham preserved their position at the top of the university Sixes game by retaining both the Men’s and Women’s Championship titles at the 2023 BUCS Lacrosse Sixes Championships.

In a repeat of both of last year’s finals, the UoN men’s side beat city rivals Nottingham Trent in the Championship final, before the women followed that win up with a victory of their own against Durham to take the Women’s Championship and retain the BUCS Sixes crowns they won in 2022.

UoN also had further success in the Trophy competition, where their Women’s 2s were victorious in the final against Newcastle, while the Men’s Trophy went to the other side of the city as Nottingham Trent 2s came past Sheffield Hallam in the final.

A record 46 teams competed at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus across the event with representation as far reaching as Plymouth, University of East Anglia, and Glasgow.

And the Sixes event proved the perfect precursor to this week’s landmark news of the inclusion of Lacrosse Sixes in the Olympic Games in 2028, with some players competing at the weekend certain to have eyes on a potential Olympic future within the sport.

Both Nottingham teams went through the competition with a 100% record, winning their groups comfortably to advance to the quarter-finals.

The women then beat Cardiff in the QF before getting past Bristol in the semi-final to make it through to the final against Durham.

Meanwhile Nottingham rolled past Newcastle in the quarters, before taking out Durham in the semis to set up the final against Nottingham Trent.

Both teams will now be keen to carry the form through back into their BUCS league campaigns as they seek success in the Northern Premier divisions.
