The BUCS Lacrosse 6s Championships return this Sunday (15 October) for the annual early season small sided competition with some of the best university players from across the country coming together to play fast and furious Sixes Lacrosse.
The Championship is back at Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus after hosting for the first time last year, with a record 46 teams competing for valuable BUCS points and to be crowned BUCS 6s champions.
The Sixes and 6-a-side format, aligns the competition with the proposed Olympic version of the sport, and England Lacrosse’s leading domestic Sixes League, The Fly.
With 24 teams in the women’s competition and 22 in the men’s, the sides, from as far reaching as Glasgow and Plymouth, have been ranked and grouped into divisions to ensure competitive competition throughout the day before heading into the knockout stages.
University of Nottingham celebrated double success at last year’s 6s Championships winning both the men’s and women’s Championship titles.
The men’s side beat their city rivals Nottingham Trent 8-5 in the final, before the women followed that win up with a victory of their own against Durham, 6-2.
Those rivalries look set to be ignited once again this weekend with both Nottingham based men’s sides keen to earn city bragging rights as they battle it out in their BUCS league campaigns, seeking success in the North Premier division.
Nottingham Trent University won the 2023 BUCS Big Wednesday Championship last season, defeating city rivals UoN 8-5 in the final and stopping a UoN side who were on course for a perfect undefeated season.
They also opened their BUCS campaigns this year against each other by playing out a 9-9 draw, setting us up perfectly for Sunday’s competition.
Meanwhile on the women’s circuit, UoN have firmly established themselves as the team to beat, winning back-to-back 6s and Big Wednesday Championships and will be formidable opposition for any side looking to steal away their crown this weekend.
