Steelheads and London Knights stormed to victory in the first set of fixtures in the brand new Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) Winter Box League on Sunday.
In two tightly contested matches, Steelheads defeated Thundercats 13-12 in the early game of the day while London Knights overcame Heaton Hornets 7-6 in the late game.
Stars of The Fly 2022 Louis Alhage and Dave Groves scored five goals each as their Steelheads side defeated an impressive Thundercats side full to bursting with box lacrosse talent.
Cai Jefferies, who helped England to become European champions in the summer, bagged five goals for Thundercats with his England team-mate Jamie Powell and team coach and captain David Leach adding two for themselves but it wasn’t enough as their side fell to an opening day loss.
In a fairly low-scoring second game, Heaton Hornets lost out to London Knights despite a first goal by a women’s player in the Winter Box League by Jane Lee.
England star Ben Page-Laycock inspired his team to victory as he scored two for the Knights leaving the Hornets disappointed but ready and raring to get back to the 3G Dome at Oxford Academy this Sunday.
Those second round fixtures will be available to watch live on Lacrosse Live UK HERE where you can also watch all the action from the first round.
